Getting into nature—Placing ourselves in an environment where we can appreciate nature is an especially effective way to restore balance and cultivate inner wholeness. Through our contact with nature, we return to ourselves—to our own nature, perhaps. Example: Once or twice a year, Larry takes long walks in a state park not far from his home. Over the years, the walks have become a way to check in with himself and to ask himself if he still feels in charge of his life. For Larry, living deliberately is a crucial value and he finds that these walks remind him of his own nature. See the section “The Window of Metaphor” in chapter 2 on using nature as a way to see into our own inner wilderness. This last point deserves special attention. There is something about nature that provides an opportunity to make contact with something outside of ourselves, something larger. As we appreciate nature, it is as if we take something of its beauty into ourselves. We are linking our inner world to what transcends us—to that which is ancient, powerful, organic. Art, poetry, or music can have this same impact.

By restoring beauty and balance, we are making space for shadow to be woven naturally into our lives. We come to work with new energy and new perspective, reaching toward a wholeness that is spiritual as well as personal.108
