Several hours later, I’m pulled from my sleep by the sound of laughter. I roll out of the bed, pull a t-shirt on, and walk out. A burnt smell hits me right away. I spot the girls in the kitchen, both bent over peering into the oven. I just lean back and watch them.

“I don’t think they’re supposed to be that color,” Annabelle says.

“We followed Winry’s recipe exactly. I’m sure they’re fine.” Waverley pulls out a tray and sets it on the stove top.

“Wav, they’re burnt.” Annabelle giggles.

“Shoot, I don’t know what happened. We followed Winry’s instructions.”

“I told you we should have let Uncle Owen do it. He cooks everything.”

I do my best not to laugh, but I definitely can’t help but smile. Not to brag, but it’s true. I do cook everything.

“This isn’t cooking. This is baking. Besides, we shouldn’t need Owen to bake cookies. Come on, help me get rid of these, and we’ll try again. Owen doesn’t need to know we burnt the first batch.”

“Too late,” I say behind them, and they jump.

“Goodness, Owen, you scared me.” Wav hits my arm when I walk up to see the damage.

I laugh. “What happened here?”

I noticed they cleaned up the mess in the living room, but now it looks like an explosion took place in my kitchen.

“We wanted cookies, and Wav insisted we could do it without you.” Annabelle walks over to grab one of the bowls off the counter. “We have more cookie dough, but I still think we did something wrong.”

“Belley, we followed every step Winry sent. It’s the oven's fault. It gets too hot.” Wav takes off the oven mitts and grabs her phone.

“Don't blame my oven. Here, let me see what Win sent.” I hold out my hand and Wav hands her phone over. I open Winry’s message. “Okay, you added everything in this order right?”

“Yes, I followed her directions exactly,” Wav huffs.

I glance at the burnt cookies. “What did you use to grease the pan? Did you use cooking spray?”

Wav shuffles on her feet. “No, she didn’t specify, so we used butter.”

“Well, there’s your problem. Using butter can cause your cookies to burn. You should have used cooking spray or parchment paper.”

“I told you he’d know.” Annabelle hops on the counter.

Waverley rolls her eyes. “How was I supposed to know that?”

“It’s alright, darlin’.” I take the rest of the cookie dough from the counter and take it to the fridge. “It’s also better to put it in the fridge for a bit and let it chill.”

Waverley crosses her arms. “Winry, didn’t say any of that. This isn’t my fault.”

“It’s okay. I’m here now.” I kiss her cheek as I reach around her to get the burnt tray of cookies. I grab an oven mitt then take the tray to the garbage and scrape off the cookies with a spatula.

“I swear, I know how to cook,” Waverley huffs and Annabelle laughs. “I do!” Waverley says adamantly.

“Of course you do, Wav. You’re right, it was the oven,” I tease her then wink at Annabelle.
