The Satyr’s Secret

Chapter One

“I can’t go. Not to that place,” Blythe said as she settled farther back in her armchair. “You’ll have to go, Cassia. Take Stanley with you. Would you like more tea?”

“No, thank you. Three cups are more than enough for me.” I glanced at my cat and familiar, Stanley, and asked him, “Do you need anything more to drink?”

He let out a chuckle and patted his stomach. “I’m already awash with milk. I don’t think I could have another drop.”

I gave my attention back to Blythe and said, “Where is this place you can’t go to? And why can’t you go there?”

She gave us a wide smile. “It’s a delightful place. I’m afraid if I go there, I won’t want to leave. You’ll see what I mean when you visit. I’m not sure an investigation is needed at the moment, but we’ll get more information when Mrs Tarblast arrives. She said she’ll be here soon.”

Stanley said, “I’m looking forward to having a new investigation, if it is one. We haven’t had anything for a few weeks, have we, Cassia?”

“No,” I agreed. “It’s been suspiciously quiet here in Brimstone. It worries me when it’s too quiet.”

Blythe nodded. “I feel the same. I’m on edge most of the time, waiting for something terrible to happen.” She let out a small laugh. “How did it come to this in our lovely town? Here we are, waiting for something awful to happen instead of appreciating the loveliness of this place. I need another drink.” She clicked her fingers and a cup appeared in the air, no doubt full of extra-strong tea. I’d noticed Blythe was drinking a lot of strong tea lately. I suppose it was better than drinking wine or vodka.

I was a justice witch in the magical town of Brimstone, and Blythe was in charge of the town. She was three hundred years old but didn’t look a day over forty, or even thirty on a good day, depending on how much magic she’d used on herself.

Stanley asked, “How’s Mrs Tarblast getting on with her new role?”

Blythe shook her head in despair. “The power has gone straight to her head. I’m sure that little gnome seems taller every time I see her. Or maybe it’s the new way she carries herself. Still, at least it keeps her on the right side of the law.” She paused and considered her words. “Most of the time anyway. I’m having to turn a blind eye to some of the plants and flowers she brings back from other towns. She claims she has to keep doing it to not arouse suspicion. She argues that she has to carry on as normal. I’ll be honest, I’m still not entirely sure where her loyalties lie.”

There was a knock at the front door and Blythe called out, “Come in. It’s open!”

A few seconds later, a gnome in a red dress with white polka dots bustled in and gave us a welcoming wave. She had her usual wicker basket slung over her arm.
