Ray came back just as Granny flipped the OPEN sign on the front door of the VV. I scooped Delilah into my arms knowing she would have a blast chasing mice while we looked through dusty old books.

“Were you successful on your rounds this morning?” I asked as I released Delilah into the back seat of my Jeep.

Ray rode shotgun. “Nothing to do with bottle rockets I’m afraid. There was someone in the alley down by mama’s flower shop, but I couldn’t make out who it was from my vantage point.”

Throwing the Jeep in reverse, I wondered if it meant anything or if it was just someone using the alley to cut through from Main Street to the residential part of town.

Not that Devil’s Elbow was that big, but it wasn’t unheard of. The alleys around downtown were busy from early morning until closing time with deliveries and such.

“You didn’t think to swoop down and take a look?”

Ray shook his head. “Thinking back on it, maybe I should have but I know Mama is locked up safe and secure there from the time she opens until closing. She doesn’t keep her back door unlocked like someone else I know.”

I rolled to a stop at the red light and rolled my eyes at him. “First of all, Aunt Dixie and I come and go from the VV to the bakery, and secondly, PJ can pop in easier coming down the alley. And Granny likes to come through the back when she brings me food. Besides, I’m a witch of some renown and Delilah always has my back. Plus, there’s you. You count as security, right?”

“That’s a whole lot of words just to defend yourself, Jo. Did I strike a nerve or somethin’?”

I may have pushed down on the gas a little harder than I should when the light turned green. Mr. Adams, the barber who worked in a shop with his oldest son, high-stepped it out of the crosswalk to get out of my way.

As he scowled, I smiled and waved all friendly like. I’d mosey down to the barber shop and apologize to him when we got back to the VV.

“Anyway,” I drawled and glanced at Ray. “Maybe we should keep an eye out for a pattern at your mama’s shop for the next few mornings at least. If it’s nothing, no harm no foul. But if someone is up to something, we’ll have a heads up.”

Ray placed a hand on my knee as we cut out of town and headed down the road towards his mama’s place. “I was thinkin’ the same thing myself, Jo. If anyone is up to sabotage, surely messin’ up the flowers Mama’s puttin’ together for Genie will be on their mind.”

I hoped it wouldn’t come to that but after the talk I’d had with Granny, the bottle rockets seemed more and more a pattern of sabotage rather than a string of coincidences.

“Flowers are a big part of any weddin’. But would someone go so
