The next day, copies of the school newspaper were posted on the blackboards of every single classroom.
The text blared, DISTINGUISHED SONS OF THE ICHINOMIYAS AND NIJOUINS DUKE IT OUT! and THE GODDESS OF VICTORY BESTOWED HER FAVOR ON ICHINOMIYA!
A copy was posted in Hanaâs class, too. Her classmates swarmed around it the moment they arrived at school.
Hana had only come in a minute ago herself. Suzu walked up to her, smiling warmly. âDid you see it already, Hana?â
âYeah, a newspaper-club member gave me a copy and said to pass it on to the clan head.â
Nozomuâs picture was splashed across the page. For a newspaper produced by a high school club, it looked quite professional. Hana was impressed. Saku would probably be happy when she showed it to him.
Maybe she should show it to Mio first, though.
Mio didnât seem like the type to lavish praise on her children, but even she should be able to find a congratulatory word or two after reading the heroic portrayal of her son written in the article.
As Hana perused the page, Suzu tapped her on the shoulder. âHana, Hana.â
âWhat?â she asked.
âSheâs back again.â
âHmm?â
Looming at their classroom door and staring at Hanaâas usualâwas Kikiyo.
However, there was something about the girl that was different.
She was laser focused on Hana, sure, but instead of her usual resentful glare, she was watching Hana with the forlorn eyes of an abandoned puppy.
Hanaâs words from the previous day must have struck a chord.
Hana assumed Kikiyo was going to gawk at her until the break was over, but after a short while, the other girl left the classroom. Up until now, she had refused to budge a single finger until the bell rang.
Hana was relieved that Kikiyo seemed to have finally given up her crusade. But she relaxed too soon. At lunch, Hana was eating with Suzu in the cafeteria when Kikiyo sat down quietly next to her.
Both Hana and Suzu looked surprised, their chopsticks pausing in midair.
Kiriya sat down across from his twin.
Hana turned a suspicious gaze on Kikiyo and said, ââ¦What?â
âWhat do you mean?â the other girl asked.
âI mean, what are you sitting here for?â
âIâm free to sit wherever I like.â Kikiyoâs words were cool and collected, but she seemed on edge.
Hana felt rather than saw the girlâs eyes flick toward her, sizing her up. She looked like she was itching to talk about something. Ignoring her was an option, but instead, Hana broke the ice first. âIf you have something to say, just say it.â
Kikiyo jumped, her gaze wandering until she seemed to seize her courage and opened her mouth to say, âI-Iâm sorryâ¦â
Hana was startled by the unexpected apology. âWhat for, all of a sudden?â
âFor trying to force you to fight. Itâs just like you said. I disdain every girl who has anything to do with Lord Ichinomiya!â she admitted.
Kikiyo had finally taken off her mask and revealed her true self. Hana didnât scorn her for it but admired her instead.
âIâve always looked up to Lord Ichinomiya,â Kikiyo continued.
