Edward kept his eyes on Reynard’s, the captain refusing to drop his eyes or look away. Percy shivered in his lap, overcome by his sudden and decidedly immature desire to show the older man exactly who Percy belonged to. He’d made his claim clear, and made it very obvious. He wasn’t backing down.

Percy was his, and no one, not even the man entrusted with keeping him safe and unharmed, had any claim on his mate. Reynard’s affection for his mate was becoming all too clear.

He and Reynard stared each other down, and it wasn’t until the limo stopped and the door was opened, a blast of cold air slamming into the rear of the car that either man moved. Percy took matters into his own hands, obviously keen to escape the tense atmosphere in the limo, and he scrambled off Edward’s lap and towards the door.

Reynard moved fast, keeping Percy from exiting the limo first. Reynard gently pushed him back to Edward, and slid from the car.

Edward went next, and helped Percy out of the limo, keeping his small consort under his arm. They’d entered the palace grounds through the rear entrance, away from the public eyes, and they weren’t the first arrivals either. A long line of limos and town cars were pulling away from the palace, and the cold was why no one was still outside. Edward stepped forward, the guards from the escort cars melding with the waiting palace guards, and they entered the palace. Servants appeared from nowhere and took their outer garments, and Edward made sure Percy’s collar was visible to anyone looking. He wanted no one making the mistake of not knowing who Percy was, and to whom he belonged.

Edward looked at Reynard, who nodded and walked off towards the parlor where the party was being held. Hopefully what Reynard was about to do would smooth over Percy’s introduction to the Court, and effectively block his family from ignoring Percy.

“Prince Edward!” a matronly woman called out in greeting, and Edward smiled. Mrs. M, short for Mrs. Emily Masers, was the head housekeeper for the palace, and she bustled over to him and Percy, hands out, smile wide on her round face. She was nearly unchanged in the last thirty years, having been employed in the palace for forever, long before Edward was born. She was in fact one of his mother’s former servants, who came with their mistress when she wed the king.

“Mrs. M!” Edward chuckled, and let her hug him, squeezing the air from his lungs. “Easy, I need to breathe!”

“Nonsense, young man! No one needs air. You’ve been gone for ages!” she laughed, and then released him. “I heard them say your limo was approaching, I had to sneak in and say hello before you joined the rabble in the parlors.”

Percy hovered at his side, head down, nervously shifting on his feet, and doing his best to be invisible. Edward didn’t know who was more surprised, him or Percy, when Mrs. M grabbed his small mate and pulled him into a huge hug.
