Chapter Seven

Destiny

After getting Junior and Montana off to school, I took Jace to spend the weekend with my mother. We had breakfast and talked for a while. Mama finished telling me about her trip to China and divulged that their next stop would be Spain. She was glowing these days, and my stepfather/father-in-law was having the time of his life, too. Their timeless love was swoon-worthy to watch, and I was there for it.

I called and spoke with Montie to let him know about the extra security the children would have this weekend. He was a bit concerned about it but also thankful for it. He now had a family to protect and didn’t want any harm to his new wife or their new son.

After planning my children’s weekend, I spent the morning focusing on myself. I dolled up for a quick weekend getaway with my husband, choosing a form-fitting red dress, long boots, and a natural face beat.

“Shoot,” I said when I checked the time on my phone. It was already 12:52 p.m., and Jacob wanted me to be at the lakehouse at one. I was going to be late.

I grabbed my purse and rolling suitcase and started walking out of my bedroom. Peter met me at the door and took the handle of the luggage. “I’ll carry that for you, ma’am.”

I smiled. “Thanks, Peter.”

He stood tall and stoic and replied, “You’re welcome. Do you need to bring anything else?”

“No, I think I have enough.” I glanced at my oversized suitcase and chuckled.

We walked to the car and got inside. I observed the passing trees as we left our rural estate and headed toward Covington.

After riding for twenty minutes, Peter’s phone started ringing, and he answered it. He said a series of “yes, sirs,” then hung up the phone and announced, "That was Mr. Turner. He wants me to stop by the mall to pick up a surprise for you.”

"Another surprise, huh?" I asked. My husband was a busy body today. What was he up to now?

Peter gave me his rare smile. “Yes, ma’am. He wants me to run into the mall to get it. He says it'll be waiting at the counter, so it shouldn't take me long."

I nodded. "That’s fine."

Peter gave his full attention back to the road, stepped on the gas, and headed toward the mall.

When I woke up this morning, I was under the impression we would go to the lakehouse tomorrow for our anniversary. However, Jacob informed me that our vacation would start today. I had no objections to that; we just had to work out who would be guarding our children.

I trusted Tallen the most, so I lobbied for him to stay with Junior and Montana at Montie’s. Jacob finally agreed because the bottom line was that we trusted all of our guards with our lives.

I leaned back in my seat and pulled out my mirror. The natural browns I chose to wear today for makeup looked great. I put the mirror back and took out my earbuds.
