Chapter Fifteen

Who the hell does he think he is? Erica exited the elevator and marched down the hall toward her office. How dare Adam say those things to her! Her. Why, if it hadn’t been for her, he wouldn’t have won half the cases he took credit for. She’d been the one to do the extensive research, the one to carefully screen their witnesses and had even gone out of her way to write his opening and closing statements.

“I’ve had a better offer,” she mimicked and clenched her fists, ignoring the pain in her palms as her nails dug into her flesh. “Ungrateful bastard.”

“Miss Connelly?”

“What?” She waited impatiently for her secretary to push up her red, wire-framed glasses and swallow hard. “Out with it, Wendy. I don’t have all day.” Easy old girl. No need to let it show just how much he’s gotten to you.

Ha! That was easier said than done when all she’d thought about for the last three months were the life-altering orgasms Adam had given her when they were together. What had she done, anyway? She’d given him everything a man could want and yet the instant she suggested that they take their relationship to the next level, he’d run for the nearest exit with his tail tucked between his cowardly legs.

“I—I, um, picked up your dry cleaning on my lunch break like you requested. Unfortunately, they weren’t able to get the stain out of your blouse. I’m terribly sorry, Miss Connelly,” Wendy stammered, keeping her eyes fixed on her fidgeting hands.

On top of being rebuffed by the one man who had kept her interest for more than a few hours, her only Versace blouse was ruined—courtesy of Adam Carlton. If he hadn’t distracted her in the break room, she wouldn’t have spilt coffee down the front of her shirt, thus costing her almost four hundred dollars and leaving her nothing to show for it.

“Perfect,” she grumbled. “Do you have any good news for me?”

Wendy nodded like a yo-yo and for split-second, Erica swore the middle-aged woman’s head might snap off her neck.

“As a matter-of-fact, yes. Your mother wishes to see you in her office ASAP.” Erica frowned as Wendy continued, “She sounded cheerful.”

“Let me define ‘good news’ for you. Good news is finding out that the lottery ticket I bought on my trip to Myrtle Beach resulted in my winning the Powerball. Good news is discovering that there’s a fat-free cheesecake that actually tastes good. Good news would be that a certain man who will remain nameless came to his damned senses and realized that I’m the best woman he’ll find in three states. Telling me that my mother wants to see me is not good news.”

“Oh.” Wendy looked at her hands again. “In that case, no. I don’t have any good news for you.”

Erica pressed her lips together to form a tight line. What good would it do to yell at Wendy? The person she was furious at was sitting in his office upstairs, undoubtedly thinking of his new girlfriend.
