Arms laden with groceries, I found Olivia on the boardwalk, peering over the shoulders of a couple who were having a heated discussion. Just as with the Glenns, back at the bed-and-breakfast this morning, the coupleâs argument almost seemed to delight Olivia.
Rolling my eyes, I went to my car to drop off the groceries, hoping the spirit would notice me. But she was too engrossed in what she was watching. The spirit had an insatiable need for sticking her nose in other peopleâs business. I was also starting to see how she and Mary couldâve been best friends.
I didnât know Oliviaâs last name, so I couldnât call her to me using the moonstone in the ring I wore. If this had been last year, I mightâve been able to convince some of the other local ghosts to help me, but most of them had moved on. Even Tim, Max, and Lois had finally decided they wanted to see what came next. And while the spirit of the former mayor Meow was still hanging around, I couldnât very well ask him for his help.
The option to leave was tempting, but the information the chief had told me about Landonâs alibi felt like something Olivia deserved to know. With a grumble, I returned to the boardwalk pretending to be just another local enjoying the spring sunshine by the water.
Walking by the arguing couple, I tried to catch Oliviaâs attention, but she didnât even look up. I was on my third pass, and was really considering giving up and telling Olivia about Landonâs alibi some other time, when I ran straight into someone.
âHey! Watch where youâre going!â A shrill voice stopped me almost as palpably as her body had.
Because I recognized that voice, and I knew this wouldnât be good.
âJenny.â I grimaced as I gazed up into the face of the other bed-and-breakfast owner in town.
Her features tightened and her eyes flared as she recognized it was me. âNothing else youâve done to try to put me out of business is working, so now youâre resorting to pushing me in the cove?â The hand she set on her hip only amplified the attitude present in her accusation.
Finally, Olivia left the fighting couple to stand next to me, but I had a feeling her proximity was less about support and more about having a front seat to the drama. She confirmed as much when she whispered, âOh, this is going to be good.â
âIâm sorry, Jenny. I didnât see you there.â
âSure, just like Iâm sure you had nothing to do with the fact that a woman was found dead in your bed-and-breakfast this morning.â
I shouldnât have been surprised. I knew she would use the news against me. I just figured she might give it more than a day. âI had nothing to do with Maryâs death.â I leveled her with my most serious stare.
She sneered back. âI have to give it to you. Itâs a smart move taking out a person everyone around here hated.â
Anger flared inside my chest.
