Colum looked up from another letter, stretching until he felt his vertebrae return to their normal positions. Eric had ordered him to be available to answer questions, which meant he had even more reason than usual to faff about, looking at old documents. He picked up his phone and considered sending something to Eric about how he’d changed his mind and wasn’t going to answer any fecking questions. As the archivist, he was the one person in the Masters’ Admiralty who could tell the fleet admiral to feck off. He wouldn’t do it, not only because Eric didn’t deserve any more stress right now but because he wanted to be useful.

Eric’s inner circle, a motley collection of newly married trinities, were faced with a nearly impossible task. In the days since the fleet admiral had sent them out on their assignments, Colum had been doing nothing but work. Which was slightly different because normally his days were work, run, watch hurling, then work. He’d eliminated watching hurling and settled for running around Merrion Square rather than going to Phoenix Park. Every request for information had been answered immediately—though there were precious few—and in his downtime, he went through old records, in case there was something there that might help.

As long as he had Josephine to actually talk to the people, he was able to focus on finding, assessing, and cataloging information. Josephine answered the phone and handled all those social niceties he didn’t understand, then, if she thought he’d better hear the information request himself, she passed him the phone. Of course, she only did that after blithely warning the caller that he didn’t like people and could be a bit brusque. He’d glare at her, she’d smile, and then they’d get down to business.

Josephine, who could talk for Ireland, had been covering for him, lying for him, for years.

Colum secretly loved people—as long as he could read about them, rather than actually interact with them. His crippling social anxiety, born of a youth spent with nary a clue how to interact with people, had taught him that the best way to avoid awkward and humiliating interactions was to avoid people altogether. Much easier to bury his nose in a book and learn about people, and the world, that way.

It was a secret he and Josephine had kept even from Eric. Colum had been the one to break into Eric’s house all those years ago. He hadn’t just been after the books they’d glimpsed through the windows. Colum had been curious about the huge blond man but wouldn’t dare talk to him. No, in Colum’s mind, breaking into his house and snooping around, then stealing a few books, was a safer solution than a simple conversation.

Josephine had been the one to quickly think of a lie, saying that Colum was being “a bit of a shite.” Colum had embraced that lie, hiding his awkwardness behind a gruffness and curse words he wouldn’t have dared use in front of his mum.
