When I arrived on the set, we rehearsed and then were sent away. While I was in the makeup trailer, one of the producers came in to speak with the woman applying the light blush to my cheeks. He whispered something into her ear. She nodded gravely, put down the blush, and picked up a robust base. As I went to put on my candy stripe Pepsi shirt, I was given a thick, bulky pad to put on underneath. This was in order to fill out my slight frame, I assumed; no one ever explained the reason to me. I began to question why they had hired me and figured they were doing the same as we did take after take, each one remarkably similar to the last. The single saving grace was the Burger King Girl. Someone in the advertising department had the wherewithal to hire Elisabeth Shue, who would go on to be nominated for an Academy Award some years later for Leaving Las Vegas. I developed an instant crush on Elisabeth. With the dayâs work done and the commercial complete, I invited her outâand was surprised when she agreed.
In an effort to appear world-weary and wise in hopes of impressing Elisabeth, I took her to the dark and boozy Corner Bistro, where I had a drink too many. A bright light of youthful optimism, she endured my jaded pronouncementsâand the drunks surrounding usâas long as she could and then was gone. I never saw Elisabeth again.
I recently mentioned this long-forgotten job to my son, who found it on YouTube. As an actor, ancient embarrassments are always just a click awayâbut Elisabeth was as adorable as I remembered.
While the commercial didnât do much to advance my nascent career, I was able to pay back some friendly loans and live off the residuals for months, until I got my next job.
