Chapter 11

“Couldn’t this have waited until morning?” Jess mutters, staring at the house nestled in the shadows across the street from where we’re hiding, crouched behind a couple parked cars with a tree behind us.

“Doesn’t make any difference to me,” Russ says, stifling a yawn. “At least you still got some sleep. We’ve been up since that cop left.”

“That’s your own fault,” she says, “not mine. Some of us know how important sleep is.”

“Yeah, well, some of us had work to do,” he snaps.

I don’t blame him for being cranky. We wanted to do as much research as we could before we left, and as it so often does, that research turned into a rabbit hole we couldn’t find the bottom of. I couldn’t sleep anyway, so it was a better use of time than just staring at the ceiling for a couple hours.

“Do you want us to drop you off at that 24-hour coffee shop?”

Jess seems to consider this for a few seconds before ultimately shaking her head. “No. I don’t want to get stuck there if a clown kills you. Besides, I can run faster than you, so if any clowns come at me with a knife, I should be fine.”

I scowl at her. “Thanks for the vote of confidence.” I turn away from her to study the house.

Choked with weeds, it reminds me of some other places we’ve investigated. The peeling gray paint and cracked and broken windows make the house look more foreboding and haunted. It definitely sets the stage for the fact that a woman may have died there.

As I study the house, the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, and I feel like there are a million eyes on me. It's just the guys in the frat houses. I'm not being watched by a whole gang of clowns, even though that's what it feels like. I touch the camera strapped to my chest. At least if we get caught, I’ll have recorded it for the police.

“Are you sure you're ready for this?” Russ asks, following my gaze.

I laugh, but it's a hollow sound. “Well, if this ends up anything like the last haunted house we investigated, we should be fine as long as he doesn’t try to hurt my dog.” At least with the investigation in Oak Cliff, we ended up solving the mystery as well as two missing-persons cases. I glance down at Bear. He’s staring at the house, tail wagging. I don’t know if he senses a ghost, or he’s just eager to go somewhere. He’s a dog, it could be either.

“Yeah, I guess so.” Russ has a can of pepper spray in his hand, and he makes sure Jess has hers. I trace the familiar canister in my pocket, glad that I bought them even though I wish I’d never had to. It's better to be safe than really, really sorry.

Once we have our cameras hooked up and are recording the investigation, Russ and Jess film a quick intro.
