Chapter 11

Hazel itched to get back to the beauty salon, but as it turned out, she couldn’t do any sleuthing the next day.

It was warm in the office, and she stared at the flower festival copy until the words blurred to grey on the screen, and she had to blink her eyes to keep them open. Why was the air conditioning always set to the wrong temperature?

Her phone vibrated on the desk with a text message. ‘Full moon tonight. The usual place.’ It was from her mum. She locked the screen and looked around to see if anyone was watching. Tonight must be her initiation ceremony. She paused, heart racing, her finger over the ring symbol. Should she call her mother and ask what would happen?

Her office phone emitted a discordant ring and she jumped. “Someone is at Customer Services for you,” said Bev, in a flat voice.

Hazel sidled past the desks, feeling frustrated. She didn’t have time for this. The morning had been spent at a course, organised by her boss, to learn how to use the calendar function of their email software properly. She was sick of hearing ‘work smarter’, ‘efficiency’, and ‘automate’.

From the thoughts of everyone else in the team, they all felt the same about the course. It was supposed to save her time, but they had travelled to the other side of the city to do the training. What about that lost time? And now she only had two hours to get her work done.

“Oh,” Hazel said, flushing, as she came around the divider. Joel was waiting on one of the grey chairs, and he sprang up when she spoke.

“I just wanted to drop this off,” he said, passing her a Tupperware. “You said you had a course on today and the free lunch might not be very good.”

“Thanks. That’s so kind,” she said. Hazel opened the lid to see a piece of chicken resting on some roast vegetables inside.

“Make sure you heat it up.” He ran a hand through his hair. She thought that the display of affection made him feel a bit awkward.

“I will,” she said, warmth spreading through her and settling somewhere in her chest. “It was finger food, so I’m starving right now.”

Joel came closer, and she could see the stubble below his lower lip. “And I want to cook you dinner tomorrow night, Red. Save you from your tinned soups.”

He’d never called her Red before and it seemed like it slipped out by mistake. He put his hand lightly on the small of her back, and she studied his mouth, wanting to be drawn closer, but stuck in place.

She was conscious of Bev standing behind the desk. With one of the biggest gossips in the office less than two metres away, Hazel wasn’t going to do anything more than look.

Then after, he thought, eyes burning into her. I want to start by peeling off —

“That sounds great,” she said loudly, slipping out of his grasp. “I’m busy tonight so I’ll see you tomorrow.
