It was the day of the full moon and the Brooklyn Pack was loading up their SUVs to make the monthly trip upstate to Little Falls, New York. I received a lot of weird looks from Pack members, which I was pretty sure revolved around the huge hickey on my damn neck. But like I told Bash last night, I really didn’t want to know. I had too many other things to worry about besides the meaning of a hickey.

“We’re all loaded up,” Bash said as he closed the trunk of his car. “Are you sure you don’t want to come?”

“Of course I want to go, but it’s not a good time right now and you know it.” I poked him in the abdomen.

“Well, don’t stay at the house. I don’t want you to be alone. Stay at the compound with Waldo and Amy.”

“That’s the plan.” I saluted him. “It’s only three days. Everything will be fine.” I grabbed his shirt and pulled him into a kiss, eliciting a cacophony of catcalls and whistles from Pack members. I grinned. We weren’t the type to show public display of affection, but once in a while it was okay.

“Enough,” he called out at the Pack, and turned back to me. “Call me if you need anything. I’ll be checking my phone frequently.”

With that, he walked away and stepped into the driver’s seat of his SUV, which Jackson, Bernard, and another wolf already inhabited. Before I knew it, they were driving down the street and out of sight.

“You good, Kenz?” Amy said from the front stoop of the compound.

I turned to face her. “Yeah, I’m fine. Just a little bummed I can’t go.”

Charles Cadwell hated my guts. He blamed me for a lot of things, but most of all for the death of his son, Jonah. Even so, I couldn’t deny that Cadwell Estate was perfect for a good run, and full moons out there were magical. I’d deal with Charles’ hatred of me a million times over just to feel the rich soil beneath my paws.

“Come on.” She waved me over. “I have Netflix queued up, and I’ve already ordered a shit ton of pizza and Chinese food.”

“What are we watching?” I followed her inside, shutting the compound’s door behind me.

“’Designated Survivor’!” she exclaimed. “I admit I watched the first few episodes without you. No worries; I’ll watch them again, but this show is bonkers! It’s about this guy who’s designated as the next person in the line of succession if the President, Vice President, and every member of the Cabinet dies in like, a bombing or mass shooting. You’re going to love it.”

I laughed. “Well, with that glowing review, I must watch it now.” It was nice to have a little slice of normal. Watching (more like binging) TV had always been our thing. We’d seen just about every show there was to watch, and I say that with pride. It was what kept us sane, what kept us human.
