BEFORE SHE KNEW IT, the grandfather clock chimed twelve. Vera groaned as she rubbed her eyes with the palms of her hands. Over the last four hours, she and the members of the rebellion had debated the best course of action until they had finally settled on one. When they had retreated to their homes one by one, Vera and Kaius had remained to make sure every little detail was ironed out. They couldn’t afford any mistakes with how little time they had.

“If you want to scout tomorrow without falling asleep mid-step, I would suggest we retire for the night,” Kaius suggested. He sat across from her at the table, his chin perched atop his arm with his eyes half shut.

Vera pressed her forehead against the table and let out a sigh. “As much as I hate to admit it, I think you’re right.”

“You must be exhausted to be admitting that.” He pushed his chair back and stretched his arms up over his head, exposing a thin band of muscle above his waistline. Despite her better judgment, she stared. Before she was caught, she made her way over to the bookshelf beside the staircase leading up to the bar, where Ambrose had mentioned leaving keys to vacant rooms for them to utilize.

“There’s only one key,” Vera said as she glanced down at the remaining key at the corner of the bookshelf bearing a small wooden tag with the numbers 08.

“I can stay here,” He offered, looking around the room for a spot to lay claim to. “I’ve slept in far worse places.”

“You’ve done more than enough to help, I refuse to be the reason you sleep on a chair or the floor.” Vera snatched his arm. “Ambrose did say that all of the rooms were equipped to house two people. There’s no reason for you to stay down here.”

“That eager to share a bed with me?” He looked at her curiously, laughing when she tore her gaze away from him to hide a blush.

Vera threw the key at him. “Maybe I should be the one to stay down here.”

Kaius caught it and hooked the ring on his finger. “You’re the one who said all of the rooms were equipped to house two people, after all.”
