Chapter Nine
Emma
I canât believe Iâm at dinner at Már. Even less believable is that Iâm here with Glen Fields, who strolled in and got us a table.
We place our orders and then I look around and say, âYou must have some major juice to be able to skip a six month waiting list to get us in here.â
He shrugs like itâs nothing. âLike I said, the owner is a good friend of mine.â
âYeah, about that. Whatâs the story there? You said you both met in med school?â
âYeah, Nicolo and I met in med school, and we both dropped out one after another.â He chuckles. âI was the first to leave. A month later Nicolo followed.â
âWow⦠I never would have guessed.â
âWhy? Is the idea of me being a doctor so strange?â I detect a hint of offense in his tone.
âNo.â I shake my head. âItâs just that youâre so good at what you do that I have a hard time seeing you doing anything else.â
âYou think Iâm good at what I do?â
âOf course I do.â
âWell, you couldâve fooled me.â He chuckles, but I can hear the hurt behind the sound.
âListen, I think youâre amazing at what you do. I mean, look at what youâve done. You built Med-Fields into one of the biggest medical equipment supply companies in the country. I recognize that couldnât have been easy to do.â
âIf you think that then why do you go out of your way to make me feel little?â
âIs that what you think? That Iâve been trying to make you feel little?â He doesnât answer me, but I can hear his acquiescence in his silence. âThatâs the last thing I want to do. I just try to be very frank with you. Though I think youâve created something great with Med-Fields, itâs also true that your devotion to the past and how things have always been done could lead to the collapse of the company. I donât want that to happen, and it will if I dance around issues. I choose to be blunt instead.â
âOK⦠That makes senseâ¦â He is silent for a moment before he rejoins me in the here and now. âAnyway, enough of that. I didnât ask you out so we could talk about work. I had hoped weâd get to know each other a little better.â
I smile at him. âYouâre right. So back to what we were talking about. Why did you drop out of med school?â
He sits back in his chair and huffs. âI donât know, I guess my heart wasnât in it anymore. I realized that I was doing it for all the wrong reasons. It took a while for me to understand, but I had always wanted to be a surgeon for the prestige. Itâs not like I had a burning desire to heal people. I just wanted the social capital and the lifestyle that went along with that profession. It didnât take long for me to realize that I wasnât truly happy.
âSo, I did some soul-searching. I came to the conclusion that business was it for me.
