CHAPTER 20

WINNIE

“Here. Drink this.” Ashley handed me a mug of steaming tea. I stared into the liquid, my mind slow and heavy.

“Thanks,” I mumbled.

“It’ll be okay.”

She’d probably said that twenty times so far that day. It was nice to hear some optimism, but things being “okay” was starting to feel less and less likely.

I wasn’t able to take care of myself as it was, and now I had a baby to worry about! How could I ever manage?

At least I had eight months to figure things out. No, less than that.

I grimaced. “Shit.”

The front door flew open, and two of Ashley’s roommates came in, sweaty and wearing running gear.

“Hey,” Rachel said. Her eyes moved down to my suitcase leaning against the couch.

The other girl—whose name I could never remember—cocked her head at me. “What’s up?”

“Not much.” Ashley smiled.

“I thought we were going to check with everyone before we had guests stay over,” Rachel said.

Shame filled me, and I dropped my face. God, I wasn’t wanted anywhere.

“I texted you,” Ashley said sweetly, though the fire was in between her words.

The other girl nodded. “Yeah. It’s cool.” She gave me a sympathetic look. “Stay with us for as long as you need.”

Emotion clogged my throat. “Thank you,” I rasped.

So Ashley had told them about my situation. And asked if I could live with them?

Ashley waited until the girls were in the back of the apartment. “They’re all cool with you staying here. Taylor, too.”

“Rachel doesn’t seem okay with it.”

“She’s grumpy about everything. It’s fine. Plus, you’ll stay in my room. It’s not like you’re taking up any extra space.”

“Are you sure?”

Though the apartment had four bedrooms, it was still incredibly small. Plus it only had one bathroom.

“Positive,” she said.

I nodded. “I’ll move out soon as I find a place. I have all the money from my first paycheck saved up.”

“Maybe we can find you a room to rent near campus. Make your life easier.”

I noticed she said “campus,” and not “work.” Probably because we were both thinking the same thing.

“He’ll fire me,” I said.

Ashley sighed. “Most likely.”

My heart sank, and though I felt like crying, the tears wouldn’t come. Apparently, I was all tapped out.

“Near campus would be good,” I said, “but I don’t even know if I can keep going. This semester is all paid for, but now I don’t have… I won’t…”

I got choked up.

“There are still loans, remember? Don’t go to the worst-case scenario just yet.”

Easier said than done, but I nodded anyway.

She bit into her bottom lip. “There’s time, too, to decide what you want to do about the pregnancy.”

My heart jumped. “I want to keep it.”

She found my eyes, and a quiet moment passed. “Okay. I’m here for you no matter what you do.”

“Thank you,” I whispered. “I can’t imagine not keeping it. I mean, I’ve never even thought about kids before, but knowing I’m pregnant, it… I don’t know. I have someone else to think about now, and that changes everything. Everything. You know?”

“Somewhat. My parents need my help, but I don’t think it’s quite the same.
