Chapter Seventeen

“What the hell is going on?” Leila’s voice broke through the quiet and she burst through the double doors.

I looked up from my desk, finishing writing notes for my meeting with Volin later that evening.

Leila was wearing a silk blouse and a short skirt, something that I was not expecting to see her in. Besides my t-shirt, I hadn’t ever seen her in anything but her field clothes.

I curled an eyebrow up at her, a smile beginning to form as I looked her up and down. As I landed my gaze on her face, I noticed the familiar look of her being pissed off.

“What a nice surprise,” I said, setting my quill back on its holder.

To my knowledge, she was supposed to be leaving this evening to be out in the field for two days. So seeing her show up here all dressed up and angry definitely caught my attention.

“Why is this back in my suite?” she asked, walking over to me and tossing the folder from earlier back onto my desk.

“Because I don’t need them,” I said blatantly, “in fact, I asked one of the guards to make sure my note was attached that—”

“I got your note!” she cut me off, throwing up a hand to stop me from talking.

“How did you hire someone without interviewing anyone?” she said.

I took a breath, trying to navigate her anger though it bouldered through the room out of nowhere. With how helpful she’d been, I had almost forgotten about her hot head.

“I did interview someone, Leila,” I said, turning my tone slightly more stern.

Despite our connection, I was not in the mood nor the position to be handed disrespect whenever she felt like it. The more I came into my place, the more she would need to understand that the dynamic had to change.

“Oh is that so? Who?” she asked, her arms now crossed over her chest.

Don’t look at her outfit, I said to myself, needing to keep my head on straight.

“Why are you questioning my decisions all of a sudden?” I asked, still looking up at her from my desk. I leaned back and crossed my arms too, the sleeves of my dress shirt hugging my arms.

“You’ve got to be kidding me!” she said, her voice getting louder and her hands being thrown up into the air. “It’s that tall girl from earlier isn’t it? The one who assaulted the staff?”

I let out a slight chuckle at her evaluation of what had gone down earlier, though she wasn’t completely wrong.

“Her name is Rheya, and she proved to be very qualified,” I said, returning my attention to my list.

“Then where is she? Why isn’t she guarding you?”

“Who says she isn’t?” I smiled knowingly.

Leila quickly looked around, trying to see her.

“Yeah, she’s quite good, isn’t she?” I said.

I didn’t have time for Leila’s jealous fit at the moment, especially considering the next day I was due to start fulfilling my regularly scheduled duties as boss.

“Qualified to what, be a floozy? Oh yeah, she looked really qualified!” Leila raised her voice now and her face was completely flushed.
