Chapter 14

Megan and Opal talked for only a while longer before Megan saw the injured woman tiring. Not wanting to set back her recovery—or be on the receiving end of Diana’s wrath for over-taxing the patient—Megan said her goodbyes and left the room. After a conspiratorial whisper to Sean to “hang in there”, Megan waved to Diana as she walked by the nurse’s desk.

As she waited for the elevator, Megan fished her phone from the bottom of her purse. She had turned the volume off and tossed it in there when she entered the hospital, not wanting to disturb recovering patients. Peering down at the screen, she saw Lucy had texted her four times, and each message seemed to get progressively more urgent. The same two words formed the text, but by the fourth message, the letters were in all caps, and there were a series of explanation marks. Reacting to her friend’s urgency, Megan dialed Lucy’s number, wondering what had her in such an uproar. She didn’t have to wait. Lucy answered on the first ring as if she had the phone in her hand waiting for Megan’s call.

“Megan, we’ve found something out about the veil. You’re not going to believe it!”

“Well? Tell me. What’s going on?”

“Not over the phone. Besides, part of the excitement will be seeing our discovery. How fast can you get to the farm?”

“I’m leaving the hospital now. It’ll take twenty minutes if there are no traffic delays.”

“Then get moving. We’re all waiting for you.”

The elevator door opened with a quiet ding, and Megan stepped in, barely noticing the man who got off before her. But he noticed her. Detective Carson started to ask her where she was going, but Megan’s comment to Lucy that he overheard made him hold his tongue.

“Okay, I’ll head for the farm now. See you in a bit.”

Hanging up her phone, she looked up and locked glances with the detective, but before either of them could say anything, the elevator doors shut cutting off any conversation. Megan couldn’t help but grin to herself; a couple of minutes earlier and she would have been caught by the detective questioning Opal. He wouldn’t be happy about that. With a twinge of guilt, she figured Sean would be reprimanded for letting her in the room, regardless of what Diana said.

She arrived at the lobby and rushed out to the parking lot. Lucy had her interest, and Megan wanted to get there as fast as she could without breaking too many speed limits. She lucked out, traffic was light, and she didn’t run into any speed traps. Seventeen minutes later, she pulled into the front parking lot of the petting zoo. With a swift and graceful movement, she jumped out of the jeep, grabbing her purse as she went. Megan all but ran down the pathway from the zoo entrance to the house Emma and Taylor shared. As she reached the porch, Barney and Gypsy were waiting for her, tails wagging with excitement to see her.
