Chapter 3 - Hello in there

Mattie

Mattie’s trailer

An evening in mid December

Mattie lay in bed listening to Allie as she mumbled in her sleep. She wasn’t acting restless at all, or seem to be having another nightmare, but she’d been talking in her sleep for about five minutes now. It had woken him up. At this point, she wasn’t even really mumbling. She actually sounded almost as if she was having a real conversation. Mattie thought about waking her, but decided to get them each a drink first. Allie always woke up very thirsty, and it would be better if he could hand her a mug before she started eyeing his throat. Not that he minded letting her drink from him, but it was probably a good idea to take the edge off her thirst beforehand. He gently eased himself from the bed to head for the kitchen.

He returned to put two full mugs on the nightstand, and then took a few quick gulps for himself, to ease his own awakened thirst. He was just slipping back beneath the covers, when Allie opened her eyes and greeted him with a smile, then eyed him curiously as Mattie recalled her previous mumblings with a chuckle. “Okay, so I’ve got to ask,” he said, “who’s got boobs?”

Allie gave him a confused look with an arched eyebrow. “What?”

“You were talking in your sleep, and among other things, you distinctly said ‘At least you’ve got boobs’. So who are we talking about here? Fill me in, give me a visual.”

Allie laughed, as Mattie lay on his side next to her and propped himself up on one elbow. “Felicity,” she answered.

“Uh huh. And do you often dream about Felicity’s boobs? Not that they didn’t seem very nice from what I saw of them.”

Alyson gave him a little shove and then lay back to look up at the ceiling. “I don’t think I was dreaming,” she told him quietly.

“Well she’s not here. In fact, Felicity and her boobs are well over a hundred miles behind us by now. It was just a dream hon. I’ve got to tell you though, I much prefer this to the other dreams you’ve been waking me up with lately. Big improvement.”

Allie lay thoughtfully staring at the ceiling. “It just seemed so real, like I was really talking to her. Have you ever had that?”

“No, but I hardly ever dream, boobs or otherwise.” Allie gave him a token smack, and he replied with a laugh. “I’ve had recurring nightmares now and then, but those are more like memories than dreams.”

“Yeah, sometimes it’s like that.” Allie agreed. “It is almost like a memory. Like it’s real, and I’m there, seeing things that really happened, except, I wasn’t actually there when they happened.”

“When you weren’t there, that’s not a memory hon, that’s a dream. Babe, you’re not making much sense.” He lay back and reached over to caress her gently as she spoke.

“Do you ever see things?” she asked quietly.

“Like hallucinations?” Mattie asked hesitantly. He could see this was opening a bad avenue of thought.
