Joy had informed them that Madison would be more likely to open up about Henryâs disappearance if Cassie spoke to her alone. Without going into much detail, the young woman had told them that out of all the kids at the camp, Madison was one of their most severe cases. Not because of the trouble sheâd caused, but because of everything sheâd been through. The girl had opened up since arriving at Camp Fortuna, but she was still nervous around most men, especially police officers.
Stone hadnât liked the idea of not being present during the questioning, but he had reluctantly agreed to let Cassie take point on this one. She didnât take his doubts personally. The detective was well-aware of her capabilities when it came to questioning witnesses and suspects. It wasnât that Stone didnât trust herâit was that he didnât trust anyone to do a better job than himself.
But he didnât get a choice today.
While Joy led Cassie toward Madisonâs cabin, Stone and Jason walked off toward the other end of camp. Down past the pond was a barn that held a few animals, including a handful of horses. Theyâd decided to talk to the director of equine services in the hopes heâd have more insight into the Abbotts before the three of them spoke with the pastor and his wife. That would be an uncomfortable conversation, but a necessary one.
Knocking on the cabin door, Joy shot Cassie a warm smile before slipping inside to inform Madison about her visitor. Cassie had no idea how much she would tell the girl about what happened to Henry. If they were as close as the boys had led her to believe, then Madison would be devastated to learn of his fate. But would that encourage her to share all she knew, or bury it deeper to keep a target off her own back?
The door to the cabin opened and two girls exited before Joy. The teenagers gave Cassie a curious look but didnât seem put out at having to leave their cabin. Maybe theyâd been allowed free time in exchange. Cassie didnât ask, and Joy didnât provide any details as she trailed behind them, leaving the door open in her wake.
Taking a deep breath, Cassie stepped inside the cabin and took a moment to let her eyes adjust to the dim lighting. It looked much like Henryâs had, with the beds, desks, and trunks arranged in the same way. The main difference was that someone in the cabin had decorated the walls with drawings ranging from tragic portraits to a simple still-life to sweeping landscapes. They were dark and beautiful, and whoever had created them had enough potential to turn their talent into a career someday. Cassie hoped theyâd get that opportunity.
Movement on one of the beds caught Cassieâs attention, and she pulled her gaze away from the artwork on the walls to the figures sitting on the bed. For a moment, Cassie thought one of the other girls had stayed behind to provide Madison with moral support.
