Chapter 20
Money left the club clueless as to what he was going to do. It was obvious that OâNeal craved the spotlight and needed for everyone to know what role he played in society. That frustrated Money so much. He could never understand why it was so hard for OâNeal to fall back and enjoy the money they were bringing in. It was like he didnât understand, attention attracted police.
Police attracted the DEA and once the DEA had your photo on their bulletin board, it was only a matter of time before you and your entire organization were spending the rest of your life in a four-by-six box. That was not the life Money was trying to lead. If there was one thing you could take to learn from Mario, it was that you could retire from the game. Though a very slim one, it was actually a possibility.
Money knew that Mario was a special breed. A lot of the things he accomplished would be by no other. But Money was more a student of the game versus anything else. He saw how Mario had a very small inner circle. There were only two people heâd deal with until his trust built up in Money. If you werenât one of those two people, you werenât talking to him and you damn sure werenât in his presence. He never attended any deals or ever discussed any prices. He was like a myth in the streets. His name rang out loud and clear throughout the streets, but you couldnât find anyone who could ever match his face with the name.
Mario wasnât flashy and didnât flaunt his wealth. Though he was worth millions, he looked like your average hardworking person. He could stand next to an employee from Home Depot and you probably wouldnât be able to tell the difference between the two of them. His appearance clearly disguised the cold-blooded killer he actually was.
The police had tried for years to try to infiltrate Marioâs organization and each time they were unsuccessful. It didnât matter how many cases theyâd built on low-level dealers or clientele, the trail always stopped with someone and that person was nowhere near important. Once they took the rap and did the years, someone else was quickly slid into their position. There was truly no way to flip anyone against Mario.
The streets couldnât dethrone him, either because no one knew enough to get to him. Itâs hard to cut the head off of the snake if you donât even know what the snake looks like or where it is. That is what made Mario one in a million. In this game, there were only two guaranteed ways out and Mario found a third.
Money couldnât help but to think if maybe it was time to step aside and get out of the game while he still had the option. He could cut his losses and turn everything over to OâNeal. Things probably would be better that way. He wouldnât have to worry about what either OâNeal or Cheese were saying and who they were saying it around.
