CHAPTER VII

A redhead Aflame

I WENT back to my own room again and poured myself a drink. I had to drown the vision of a bottle of soft drink and a straw. I also had to work out what I was going to do the next day.

I had it just about worked out when I had a caller. I yelled out, ‘Come in’ and in she came.

Flavia Romberg.

She was wearing a negligee of some black, rustling stuff that was cut low enough in front to give her a cold and wasn’t opaque enough for her to stand in front of any light-source with confidence.

Flavia stood in front of the light-source and looked at me. I looked at Flavia and somehow she looked different. A redhead aflame.

‘Have you made up your mind about what you’re going to do about everybody tomorrow?’ she asked.

‘Sure,’ I said. ‘I’m letting them go home. At twelve in the morning they can quit Pine City as they will.’

‘Oh!’ she seemed surprised. ‘Why are you letting them go? Do you know who the murderer is?’

‘No,’ I said. ‘But I’m just naturally a soft-hearted slob!’

‘I wouldn’t say you were soft-hearted. The rest follows all right!’

‘You know something?’ I said coldly. ‘You wouldn’t be at all attractive if you didn’t just happen to be a woman!’

‘Do you think I’m attractive?’

‘I hadn’t realized your possibilities until I saw you in that outfit,’ I said.

‘This old thing!’ She twirled around disdainfully. ‘I’d almost forgotten I had it.’

‘Would you like a drink?’

‘Yes, please.’

‘Good. Fill my glass again, will you?’

She glared at me for a moment then refilled my glass and poured herself a drink.

‘Don’t get up,’ she said as she handed me the glass. ‘Something might break!’

‘Thanks,’ I lifted the glass. ‘Here’s to redheads in old things. May they never buy any new!’

‘Do you find me attractive?’

‘I’ve been trying to convey that impression,’ I said. ‘Maybe my choice of words hasn’t been too good. I think you’re a wow! The greatest! The mostest! I think you’re a ball! Do I make myself clear?’

‘You’re definitely helping.’

‘But it’s a wasted effort,’ I said. ‘You don’t care about the birds and the bees stuff – that man and woman stuff. To you Gregory Peck conjures up a vision of a tame canary and Clark Gable is an architectural term!’

She looked at me soberly for a moment then shook her head. ‘No,’ she said. ‘I’ve changed. You worried me. You shook my girlish confidence. I hung around you like a limpet and you paid me as much attention as you would a non-alcoholic drink! But now your reactions are positive, my confidence is restored again!’

‘That’s fine,’ I said. ‘If you come a little closer I could restore your confidence even further!’

She didn’t come any closer.

I snapped my fingers a couple of times. ‘Don’t be shy. Flavia!’ I said. ‘This is an experience that every girl has to face up to sooner or later. And though I say it myself, I am just the guy to get your experience from!’

‘You certainly are unique!’ she said wonderingly.
