“THIS IS THE VIEW FROM the camera in the front hall.” He pointed out the different party attendees, including Dot and I, as people came and left.

“Keith Duncan arrived here,” Dot said, watching Striker allow the big guy to enter at 9:51. “When does he leave?”

“I talked to him standing just inside the door there,” Seneca said. “I left him standing there and went to the ladies’ room where I saw you two. I assumed he left because it didn’t seem like he wanted to wait around until I found Clint.”

“What was the message he asked you to give Clint?”

“He just asked me to tell Clint to be sure to check out his article coming out tomorrow in Music City Beat. I thought it was odd that he’d come all that way to tell him something he could have just as easily have called or texted.” She shrugged. “I just figured any chance to make an appearance and rub shoulders with the big shots at the Opry.”

“Let’s keep watching and see when he leaves,” Dot said. “He should be coming right back out after your conversation.”

Eyes glued to the screen, we watched as partygoers headed home, exiting a few at a time, but still no Duncan. The seconds ticked by as Striker stood at the door wishing everyone a safe trip home and calling an Uber for anyone not able to drive themselves. Suddenly, Striker turned his head and ran inside, leaving his post unattended.

“That’s when I heard Seneca’s scream,” he said. “I ran inside to find out what was going on.”

Oh, how I wished we could see what was happening on the other side of that door. No sooner had Striker gone inside and closed the door behind him, but it opened, and Keith Duncan quickly slipped into the hall and out of the camera’s view, presumably down the stairs and out of the building. The time stamp on the video was 10:14. What had he been doing inside for twenty-three minutes?

“Seneca, if Ray died at 10:08 and you screamed at 10:14, you must have come within mere minutes of witnessing the murder.”

Her eyes went big as saucers as her hand flew to her mouth. “Oh my gosh!” she said, swallowing hard. “I don’t even want to think about what could’ve happened if I’d seen someone killing Ray.”

“Is it just me or does anyone else think it’s odd that while everyone is rushing toward the commotion, K.D.’s going in the opposite direction?” Striker asked.

“Yes, he doesn’t even seem curious,” Dot agreed. “Maybe because he already knew what had happened.”

“It sure looks that way,” I said. “Or in his defense, maybe he didn’t really care what was going on, but no matter what it was, he didn’t want his name attached to it, so he thought it better to skedaddle before all you-know-what broke loose.”

“What did the detective say when he saw this footage?” Dot looked at Striker.

“He asked me who that was, and he wrote down K.D.’s name. That’s all.
