Chapter 9

NINE

* * *

Walk Towers. Those words echoed in Pete Zendel’s mind as he jumped from sleep and sat up on his bed. He forced air into his heaving lungs. It was a nightmare. Across from him, a repeat broadcast of President Towers’ inauguration played as the man waved to the crowd during the presidential inaugural parade. Pete clasped a hand over his face, a sunken feeling weighing him down. A gentle hand curved along his shoulder, and his eyes lifted to his wife, Patricia, watching TV while he slept.

A worry line creased her brow. “Honey, are you okay?”

He exhaled long and patted the bed for her to sit closer, and she did. “I’m not sure.” He pointed at the TV and rubbed his neck. Should he rehash the history he’d told her before?

Maybe he’d better do so. “Twenty years ago, as CEO of Cortexe Corp., I’d ordered Captain Towers to be killed.” His lips thinned over his teeth as though to silence the words. “Walk Towers,” he choked them out, “that was what I instructed my men to do. Based on my order, he was forced into a van along with Mike Argan, and an explosion was detonated along the way. They were supposed to die there. ”

He twisted to her, sure his sorrow marked his face since the frown hadn’t lifted in hers. But she said nothing, only listened, blue eyes open and attentive, waiting. “By a miracle, they survived. I’m just realizing now…if I’d killed Robert then, I would’ve… slain… a future President. And if I had killed Ruby, too, after holding her captive, I would’ve killed a future First Lady.”

Bitter regret soured his tongue. “Such is not a burden that leaves you lightly, sweetie. No matter how much I try for it not to weigh me down, it just does.”

His shoulders drooped, and he lifted his head heavily. “I think I have enough regrets in my life, but that was one failed mission I’m very happy failed. Or I would never have forgiven myself. The consequences of your action surpass you, and sometimes, can rob a nation of irreplaceable treasure.”

Those blue eyes gentled as she drew his head closer, rested it on her chest, and stroked his hair. Closing his own eyes, he relaxed against her soothing fingers. “And that’s why I’m here. I’m your wife, Pete. When you have such down moments, share them with me so we can share the burden like you’ve done. And I’m sorry you had such a nightmare of a reminder about the past. I know you’ve been used to shouldering everything by yourself, but it’s time we shared not only the happy times, but also the sad times from the past.”

He straightened and blinked a tear back from dropping. “I know, and I appreciate you so much. You’re a very wise woman. I love you, Patricia.”

“I love you, too, Pete.” She kissed him. “I’m also glad your mission then had failed. And I understand, a little, how you must feel now.
