LUKE FOUND JAZZ, SITTING on the floor of their bedroom, surrounded by a mountain of crumpled papers and writing supplies. She raised her tear-streaked face when he walked through the door. The sight made him want to kill something.

Rolling her eyes at him, she motioned at the mess. “I’m being a baby, crying because I can’t come up with the most important public relations campaign of my life. The good news is, I’ve designed tee-shirts for Vlad, the bookends and even Marie. But I just can’t...”

“What? Figure out how to stop a war? I’m not sure even the world’s most creative PR campaign in history could do that, Jazz. Your work is supposed to make humans think. Not keep the peasants with pitchforks from storming the castle.”

Ignoring her glare, he plucked her out of the middle of creative chaos, dumping her on their bed. The dark circles under her eyes upset him. He saw the tray of half-eaten food and the pot of coffee Sadie brought his mate. Tasting the sweet flavor of oranges on her lips, when he bent to claim her mouth in a short kiss, he acknowledged she had at least eaten something.

But the stress of the last couple of weeks was getting to Jazz. If the communal living and threat of bloodshed weren’t enough, there were the visits with her sadistic sister to contend with. She had been poked, prodded and read by every device Eve had at her disposal.

Since Adam’s minions scoured the land for everything on his scientist mate’s list, Jazz’s fertility schedule had been documented to the nth degree.

While Luke was worried about Jazz, Adam was pulling his hair out over Eve. The woman never slept. She ate only when Adam handfed her in the lab. The woman had decided if they were all going to die, there better be a damn good reason for it. Eve was pushing herself to the breaking point, trying to complete her research.

Making good use of the available vampires, she took countless blood samples.

Luke groaned silently. And from him, she took other samples. Ones spurted in a cup after a few moments locked in the lab closet with his wife.

Luke was going along with everything because it meant maybe someday, he and Jazz might have a child. Some of the other vampires tried to rebel—until Vlad took Veronica into that same small room, making his donation to the cause. Dracula let it be known that he would personally stake any vamp who didn’t cooperate with the wild-eyed Eve.

Luke thought it funny that Vlad was just a little afraid of Jazz’s sister.

Lying beside her, he arranged their bodies comfortably. “Vlad told me about his shirts. Before you design him another slogan, do you think you could let me know? ‘Cranky’ isn’t the word I would use to describe The Impaler. What did you come up with for Marie? And Brian and Matt?”

“Brian and Matt were easy. Thing One, for Brian and Thing Two, for Matt.”

“I don’t get it.” Luke frowned.
