Chapter 13

When they finally arrived at the B&B, Maggie made an attempt to part ways in the parlor. A scented candle burning pleasantly on the front desk gave off the aroma of sweet vanilla. Mrs. Burnside was probably in bed. There were no guests loitering about, and the soft tick-tick-tick of the grandfather clock standing solemnly against the wall was the only real sound. It prompted Maggie to whisper.

“I had a really nice time,” she said softly, unable to keep from smiling.

“I did too,” Robert said. “I promise next time, we will get to my house and roam around inside. I just know you’ll love it.”

Maggie blushed as she stuck out her hand to shake. Robert chuckled, took her hand, and raised it to his lips for a soft kiss. Maggie wasn’t sure if she wanted to laugh or faint. What kind of guy did that? Was he being sincere, or was he making fun of her? More importantly, why was he being this way? Robert Hallas could have his pick of all the woman in town.

“Good night,” Maggie said and turned to walk up the steps.

“I told you I was going to walk you to your door, remember?”

Maggie began climbing the stairs. At her door at the end of the hallway on the third floor, she pulled her key from her pocket.

“This is me,” she said and rocked slightly on her heels, unsure of what to expect but hoping nothing would happen to ruin the night. She wanted to thank him for a good time and to tell him she looked forward to doing it again and to seeing the inside of his family home. But she bit her tongue and held it all back, knowing she’d get tongue-tied and stutter her way through it as if she were talking with wood chips in her mouth.

“Have a good night, Maggie.” He leaned closer.

“You too,” she replied. She turned her back to him and slipped her key into the lock. Every hair on her neck stood up, and she was sure she could feel his breath on her neck. If she were to turn around now, his lips would be right there, and then what? She’d have to kiss him.

Without realizing it, she pulled her shoulders up around her ears and quickly turned the lock. Without looking back, she slipped inside her room and closed the door tightly behind her. It was only after the sound of the lock slipping into place cracked through her room that she realized how rude she must have come across. She held her breath with her back against the door and listened to the muffled sound of his footsteps over the carpet fading down the hallway.

What is the matter with you? That was so rude it wouldn’t be a surprise if he never talked to you again. It’s not like he’s got a touch of Ebola. He was waiting for a kiss. Maybe a kiss on the cheek was all he wanted. Maggie, you act ridiculous sometimes, she chided herself.
