After yesterday’s incident at the bakery, Orin and I decided not to go back to the Muir Woods just yet.

Well, actually, he made the decision that we should probably stick close to Brewster to make sure that nothing else strange and damaging happened for a while. I hadn’t talked to Linda since we had left, and when I walked past the bakery this morning, I noticed that even though I could see her inside the shop, the “closed” sign was hung on the door, and it was very apparent that she didn’t want to be bothered. I thought that it was best to leave her alone, at least for now.

I decided to spend the day with Orin and Chet in the bookstore. I was actually surprised that they both mentioned wanting to hang around the bookstore today. I thought for sure that Chet would demand that I go back to his house with him to do more reading of the ancient manuscripts and that Orin would be busy trying to come up with a plan to reign Chet and all of his crazy schemes in before they caused more trouble for everyone again.

I hadn’t seen Persephone or Brayeden since they left the bakery and figured that was probably for the best. Knowing what little I did about my mother, I imagined that she was off being a reclusive orange tabby somewhere and was in the same kind of “don’t bother me” mood that Linda was in. Sometimes it was best just to honor people’s wishes when they needed time to be alone and sort through their thoughts. Ned had gone over to the bakery to help Linda re-pot her plant. Apparently, he was the least intrusive of all of us and was welcomed back into the bakery first. That was fine with me because it gave me some time alone with the two guys to do exactly what Linda had suggested; to be more observant.

“I have to say that I am really surprised to see the two of you sitting next to each other on the couch and reading as if nothing at all had happened. Yesterday the two of you were ready to kill each other,” I said.

“We wouldn’t have actually killed each other,” Orin said as he looked up from his book.

“Speak for yourself,” Chet joked.

“Okay, well, I probably would have at least severely hurt him,” Orin added after hearing Chet’s interjection.

I watched the two of them as they held up books to their faces that I knew neither of them could read since everything in the bookshop was written in the ancient language, and I started to really think about what Linda had said and what I had seen back at the bakery yesterday.

“Hey, are you guys going to be enemies still, or are you going to try to work together now?” I asked.

“That does always seem to be the question, doesn’t it,” Orin said as if he were mulling it over.

“Chet, I would have thought that you would want me to continue reading to you today,” I said.
