Chapter Eleven

Safely inside, I said wryly, “You realize you basically jinxed everything by telling Zelda the night was a success.”

He grinned at me. “Sorry about that. But it was going really well. Up until the last moment, anyway. I’m sure we can persuade Zelda to allow another block party again. Maybe we can form a committee so she doesn’t have to take on all the planning.”

“But you know Zelda. Even if we did have a committee, she’d still take everything over. She’s awful at delegating.”

Grayson said, “She’s awful at being in a good mood, too. I don’t think I’ve ever seen her even feeling chipper, much less in a sunny mood.” He paused. “What did you make of what she said about Veronica?”

I sighed as I patted the salad dry and transferred it to another container. “Well, aside from the fact that she revealed my patron’s identity, I thought it was interesting Veronica was so angry with Victor on the day before his death. She’d given me the impression that she hadn’t seen him for ages. It sounds like she wasn’t exactly being truthful.”

Fitz sauntered into the kitchen, regarding us thoughtfully as we dripped rainwater all over the floor. I pulled out a few cat treats and put them in front of him. “It’s been a weird evening, hasn’t it, Fitz?”

Fitz’s expression seemed to agree with me. I rarely pulled furniture into the front yard, stuck food on it, and talked with neighbors. Or got caught in massive rainstorms without an umbrella. He gave up trying to figure it out and happily nibbled his cat treats.

Grayson said, “Okay, so we have a plan for Monday, right? The panel discussion in the community room. If Joel Burns is still as angry at Victor as he had been, it should be easy to get him talking about what went wrong between them.”

I nodded. “Hopefully, he’ll feel like airing his grievances.”

“And you’ve got the day off tomorrow, right? Feel like hanging out?”

I smiled at him. “Considering you just got that gym membership, I think we’d better make use out of it.”

Grayson made a face. “You’re right, although the idea of having a very lazy Sunday hanging out in your backyard sounds a lot better somehow.”

“Well, if we’re going to have weather like this,” I said, gesturing to the torrential rain coming down out the window, “then it might be better to be inside doing a workout.”

We made plans for Sunday. Grayson grabbed one of my robes, which looked hilariously out-of-place on him, and we threw his soaked clothes in the dryer. Then we curled up together on the sofa to watch The Maltese Falcon and drink the wine I’d been wanting earlier.

We did get that workout in on Sunday afternoon, then Grayson and I tried out a group exercise class. It was a bodyweight class, which I thought might be an easy way to start out. We were both surprised that the lunges, modified pushups, and squats wore us out as much as they did.
