CHAPTER EIGHT
The birding society had even more takers for the owl prowl that night than theyâd had the night before. It was eleven oâclock before they wrapped things up and headed for home. Walter, unfortunately, had a hay fever attack and had gone home an hour early, and Hazel caught a ride with Harry since their houses were close to one another.
As the festival wound down over on Main Street and the last of the visitors trickled away, the night suddenly became eerily quiet. Helen looked up toward the darkened library and felt a chill run down her spine. It seemed an age since sheâd seen the moving light through the windows, even though it had only happened the night before. A brisk wind whipped up and moaned through the trees.
âIâm good and spooked,â said Annie.
Helen nodded in agreement. âMe too. How about a movie night at my house?â
âThought youâd never ask,â said Annie. âI have no desire to be home alone right now.â
âSame here.â Helen pulled her sweater around herself, an unbidden memory of Reggie lying dead on the floor coming into her mind. âHow about you stay in my guest room tonight? We can run by your house and get your pajamas and toothbrush.â
âSlumber party!â Annie clapped her hands. âI have a giant bag of potato chips just waiting to be cracked open.â
As the two friends passed the community garden, the last of the Bloomers were heading home. Adam was still among them.
âHey, Adam,â called Annie, shooting a wicked grin at Helen. âWant to come to Helenâs for a movie night?â
Helen gave her an elbow jab to the ribs.
âSure. Sounds good,â said Adam. âWhat are we watching?â
âSomething not scary,â said Helen.
Adam chuckled. âPerfect. You two go ahead. Iâve got to get a few things set up for tomorrow. Iâll be along shortly.â
Helen and Annie linked arms and hurried down the lane through the chilly night. Within fifteen minutes, theyâd stopped by Annieâs house and were settling in at Helenâs.
âLetâs build a fire,â said Annie.
âGreat idea,â said Helen. She hadnât used her fireplace since moving to Oliverâs Crossroads but had already bought a cord of wood in anticipation of enjoying a nice cozy fire. It was definitely cold enough out to have one tonight. She and Annie were just arranging the wood in the grate when Adam arrived. He looked concerned.
âWhatâs wrong?â asked Annie.
âAre the police still working with the crime scene inside the library?â
âWell, technically they are,â said Helen. âGeorge said we can open tomorrow afternoon. Itâs not cleaned up yet.â
âI wonder if theyâre inside there right now,â said Adam.
âAt this hour? I doubt it.â
âThatâs what I thought. But I could swear I saw someone inside as I walked by. It was like . . . like a shadow passed by the window. There are those dim lights inside . . .â He stopped and shook his head. âNo, maybe I was just seeing things.â
Annie shivered. âOr it was a ghost. Reggieâs ghost!â
Helen sighed. She went to the front door, took her sweater off the hook, and put it back on.
