CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

“The Citadel has no jurisdiction when it comes to the texts protected by the Guild and will not be privy to their handling. It is solely up to the Gatekeepers of the Guild to dictate the procedure for protecting these coveted tomes.”

-Article III Section 4.6 of the Citadel Lexicon

Nervous energy buzzed through me.

Sunday night came quickly and I was no more mentally prepared to go to Caelum University than I was the day we’d made the plan. Even having worked a double shift the day prior and a short shift that morning, I still found myself wound up way more than I was comfortable admitting.

Privately, I told myself that it was due to the potential danger we might encounter trying to retrieve another one of the books, but a small voice in the back of my mind was constantly correcting me by reminding me that my nerves were due to Archer, instead.

I growled to myself at the thought, continuing to pace the confines of my room at the Guild. Archer was going to show at any moment and I felt like my heart was about to thump out of my chest.

Since the knife fight, Archer and I acted as if nothing had transpired between us and we merely went through our usual range of motion, even though there was the hint of underlying stress about it. Both of us pretended like the electricity buzzing between us wasn’t there, but I couldn’t deny the truth.

I’d nearly kissed Archer.

I kept telling myself that it was just a moment of weakness and nothing more. But if that were true, I wouldn’t keep feeling the sense of shame that plagued me. The regret was so powerful that when he’d finished his impromptu mission that night and he’d showed back up at my room to finish our conversation just as he’d promised, I couldn’t face him. He’d knocked quietly and creaked open the door, but I’d pretended to sleep, unable to gather the courage to speak with him.

So he had let me sleep and we’d been dancing around the subject ever since.

But what if I hadn’t faked it and what if I had openly greeted him upon his return? What would have happened then?

What line would we have crossed, forcing our friendship to never be the same again?

I shook the thought from my head and took a seat on my bed with a huff. I couldn’t lose focus on what was to come and pondering the endless possibilities would only be that: A distraction.

As if summoned, Archer showed up at my door in his normal, casual clothing. We had agreed that there would be cameras and if something didn’t go according to plan, then we could at least appear to be college students instead of him looking out of place in his combat gear. I doubted he could ever pass for a college student, though, not with the way he held himself with pure confidence that a young adult would only dream of having.
