CHAPTER 10

“This is making sense,” Martha announced a short time later, after she’d polished off her smoky barbecue burger, plus onion rings and fries – as well as slurping up a chocolate shake.

Pru marveled at her appetite. She’d even given her roommate a few of her fries and onion rings.

“You mean Candy didn’t have much money?”

“Exactly.” Martha nodded. “If her books weren’t selling, and she didn’t pay for her cosmetics, and now she scored a free burger – probably with all the trimmings – what else did she get up to, to get stuff for free?”

“All I can think of is how she organized book clubs at the libraries in the area so they would have to buy her book and she’d earn royalties,” Pru admitted. “Remember, she mentioned a library in Sacramento who bought fifteen copies of Race to the Sunset.”

“That’s right.” Martha’s eyes lit up. “I guess we should investigate that next.”

“Wouldn’t Mitch – Detective Denman – do that?”

“Probably. But what if he doesn’t ask the same questions we would?”

“He does know you’re poking around in this, doesn’t he?” She finished her shake, unable to help the discreet slurp at the end.

“He knows I like sleuthing.”

Which wasn’t an exact answer.

“Would you like anything else?” Cindy appeared.

“Not for me.” Pru patted her stomach. She hoped she hadn’t eaten too much – but Martha was right – the food had been delicious.

“Nor me.” Martha sounded regretful. “It was super yummy, though. Be sure to tell Doris for me, won’t you?”

“I will.” Cindy smiled. “Hey,” she leaned towards them, “you know how you were talking about book club before? Well, there was another customer in here that day when Candy was here complaining about her meal, who’s also in your group.”

“Really?” Pru asked.

“How do you know?”

“Doris told me. She looked to be in her late forties and had this kind of elegance about her. And she wore this really smart suit and carried this really classy old school purse. I don’t know her name, though.”

“That sounds like Eleanor.” Martha sounded excited.

“It does,” Pru said thoughtfully.

“Did she nit-pick about her burger?” Martha asked.

“No.” Cindy shook her head. “But she did look over at Candy a few times when she was complaining. A lot of customers did, though. Candy made sure everyone knew she was dissatisfied.”

“Maybe that’s why she was a little snarky with Candy at book club,” Pru remembered back to the first meeting.

“Yeah, I wondered what her problem was with Candy, but I didn’t like to say,” Martha replied.

“Well, I’ve got to take some more orders, so I’ll see you guys around.” Cindy smiled at them. “I’m glad you enjoyed your meal.”

“You betcha!”
