Wrudge sniffed the chalk cautiously and touched the surface of the smooth stones. Slowly and carefully, he made his way around the circle. There was only more of the same. It wasn’t long before he realized that going ‘round and ‘round wasn’t getting him anywhere. Although rats are easily distracted, they also don’t spend much time on any single thought, so although the ring of chalk was intriguing, it was time to move on.

Snapping out of it, Wrudge tried to cross into the inner circle but couldn’t. At first, he felt a slight tug at his insides, but as he moved over the stones, he began to feel so heavy that he had to plop down on the dusty ground. Luckily, being a rat, Wrudge’s first thought was: don’t panic. It wasn’t the first time he’d gotten stuck, and it wouldn’t be the last. Rats are masters of squeezing into tight spaces. Obviously, that means they get stuck now and then, but every rat knows that if they panicked, well, let’s just say that wouldn’t result in anything good.

Although many people think of rats as simple-minded, rats prefer to think of themselves as practical. Therefore, Wrudge’s first thought was, “If I can’t go forward, maybe I should go backward?”

That worked nicely, and in a moment, Wrudge was back on the outside, looking in.

Another stalwart quality of rats is persistence. If a rat wants something or needs something for the colony, they’re going to get it! Therefore, Wrudge tried again. No luck. Again and again, he tried to cross the circle, but every time he was pulled to the ground before reaching the other side.

That was when he looked up and saw his girl crying. She was also trying to get to Aargh, but she couldn’t get past the stream. Every time she tried to step over it, she slipped backwards onto the grass with a thump. Soon she was frantically racing around the circle. Wrudge tried to keep up, but his ring was much larger, and she ran ahead of him. Suddenly, there was a scream!

As Wrudge rounded the bend, he could see behind the hut. His girl had collapsed onto the ground. No matter how hard he tried, Wrudge couldn’t get to her.
