CHAPTER ELEVEN

The hospital parking lot was full when I pulled in, so I had to circle like a shark waiting for its next victim to even get a spot.

While I waited, I reached into the back seat to get the file Al had given me, which made it much easier for me to put faces to names and names in Google to see what turned up.

Flipping it open, I scanned the contents, my focus narrowing on the list of names—persons of interest, according to the official terminology, but to me, they were potential keys to unlocking the mystery of Parker's untimely demise.

I read through the list, and one name sparked a flicker of recognition, igniting a cascade of thoughts.

Vera "Viper" Tinsley.

The name leaped off the page, not just for its uniqueness as a name that was hard to forget, but because it had recently crossed my desk in a completely different context.

Vera had approached the National Park Committee with a proposal to sponsor the entire fishing tournament—a generous offer that had sparked a flurry of discussions among the committee members.

Her nickname, "Viper," had seemed odd at the time, a stark contrast to the philanthropic gesture she was making.

Now, seeing her name on the list of persons of interest, the pieces began to shift in my mind.

Could her offer to sponsor the tournament be related to Parker's death? Was it a mere coincidence, or something more calculated?

The timing of her sponsorship, so close to the tragedy, suddenly seemed less like a community-minded gesture and more like a strategic move.

But what was her motive? And why had Al pegged her as a person of interest?

It was a lead I couldn't ignore, a thread that, if pulled, might unravel more of the mystery surrounding Parker's untimely end.

Understanding Vera "Viper" Tinsley's motivations and her connection to Parker would require a blend of subtlety and directness that I knew only someone like Abby had. She could use the library’s databases to research Vera and her company.

Could there be a connection I hadn't seen before? Was there an overlooked detail that could tie one of these individuals more closely to the events leading up to Parker's death?

Since I was going to be going to the office this afternoon for that job, I knew I had to make time to look into the files we kept for all the people who applied to sponsor the bass tournament.

Maybe someone else on Al’s list had filled out an application too.

For a brief moment, I had to put my thoughts on hold and pull the car into one of the spots coming open to park.

Once parked, I grabbed my phone and texted Abby to see if she had a quick second while at the library to search Tinsley's Tackle & Gear and grab anything she could. Then I headed into the hospital, where I found Ellis sitting up in bed.

With Vera's name firmly etched in my mind, I stepped out of the car, the hospital's automatic doors whisking open before me.
