CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Reilly gripped the phone. “Well, it’s not nothing, McNamara. We’ve got the keys, and the fact he owns the buildings, and the way he hasn’t been cooperating. So, I thought maybe if you could talk to someone in the prosecutor’s office—”

“No one’s drafting a warrant based on that, Reilly, I’m sorry,” said McNamara’s voice on the other end of the phone. “Especially not right now, when everyone’s running around trying to bust up people who keep trying to throw parties.”

Reilly was sitting up straight on the couch in his living room. Wren was standing in the doorway to the kitchen, clutching a mug of coffee. Reilly made a face at her. “People are throwing parties?”

“Oh, yeah, all over,” said McNamara.

“Like, kids?”

“Grown-ass people in their forties,” said McNamara. “We get there, and they’re all drunk and disorderly, and it’s a pain in the ass. Look, I’m not saying that this move makes any sense either. I don’t know anyone who’s sick either. Maybe the government is overreacting. But it’s better to overreact than to have people die, you know?”

“Yeah,” said Reilly. “Totally.”

“Hey, how’s Wren?”

“You seriously asking me that?”

“Is she with you?”

“Can we get back to talking about the prosecutor’s office drafting me a warrant?” said Reilly. “She’s my girlfriend, McNamara. You need to let this go.”

“You aren’t married to her, are you?”

Reilly rolled his eyes, making another face at Wren.

Wren raised her eyebrows, looking confused.

“The warrant,” said Reilly.

“I’m not calling anyone for you,” said McNamara.

“Okay, well, I’ll call them myself,” said Reilly.

“No one’s in the office right now, I can tell you that.”

“Do you have numbers for anyone who might—”

“Give it up, Reilly. It’s a lost cause. Get some evidence if you want into Trask’s house. Besides, this guy owns a big chunk of the county. He’s a pillar of society.”

Reilly snorted.

“I’m serious. You can’t just start screwing with him because you’re bored.”

“This isn’t because I’m bored,” said Reilly. “But, okay, I get what you’re saying. Thanks anyway, McNamara.”

“Sorry I can’t be of more help.”

“Yeah, it’s all right. Take care of yourself, okay?”

“Will do.”

Reilly said his goodbyes and hung up the phone. He tossed it onto his coffee table.

“No go with the prosecutors locally?”

“Nope,” said Reilly, flopping back on the couch. “And McNamara’s crush on you is getting less adorable and more annoying.”

“It was never cute,” said Wren, rolling her eyes.

“He’s determined, I’ll give him that,” said Reilly.

She sat down next to him on the couch. “You want me to try with the feds? See if they can work something to have jurisdiction since it’s our case now?”

“Maybe we should start making out the next time we see him,” said Reilly. “Lots of kissing, right in front of his face.”

“You’re awfully territorial all of the sudden.” She was amused.

“Maybe some groping,” he said, sitting up and giving her a suggestive look.

“You’re disgusting,” she decided, fishing her own phone out of her pocket. She set her coffee down on the coffee table and began scrolling on the screen.

“What?” he said. “You don’t like it when he hits on you, do you?”

“He doesn’t hit on me,” she said.
