Chapter Ten
The entire time we moved around the yard, mingling and talking to the vampire guests, Jax kept his hand at the small of my back. If he moved his hand, it was to entwine his fingers with mine, and once or twice he dragged me to a dark corner for a quick kiss. We were in that sweet spot where everything felt new and perfect, and we werenât wasting it.
The barbecue was a front for making sure that we would have allies and backup when we took on the council, of course. Also, it was a way to prove to the council that weâd bonded. After this, they couldnât question anything.
We spoke first with Jannah. I thought maybe Jax should talk to her alone, that I would only make matters complicated or awkward, but he wouldnât let me out of it. âCome on,â he murmured. âOur guests are waiting for us.â
âJax, this is a lovely party. Itâs refreshing to attend somethingâ¦â She waved her hand. âRustic. Not so stuffy.â Backhanded compliment? Yeah. Oh, well.
Jannah had already sampled several of the humans and currently had her arm around a tall, dark drink ofâ¦ahemâ¦water from the club. If Iâd been single, I mightâve partaken myself. The guy was pretty hot. My gaze drifted over to Jax. Every other man paled in comparison. And that was saying something considering how fair-skinned Jax was.
âHailey and I were wondering if you have a minute to speak privately.â He nodded once, and Mr. Tall Dark walked away so it was just the three of us.
âNow that youâve run my dinner away, what can I possibly do for you?â Her tone was less than friendly, as was the narrow-eyed glare she aimed at me. Geez, she was downright icy.
âWe need to talk about the council and weâre looking for support,â Jax spoke softly because vampires had big ears and werenât afraid of using them. Everyone else was in a big group conversation near the house or inside. I didnât think theyâd hear us.
âOh, Jaxon.â She shook her head, and it was as much an insult as if sheâd come out and called him stupid. âThe council protects us. They make sure weâre safe from those who would have us extinguished before we could even speak and promise not to hurt anyone.â Her sigh came out fast and loud like she was trying to attract attention. Not to mention the flashing lights on her dress were extremely eye-catching in the dim fairy lights all over the shadowy yard. âLetâs not start this conversation, yes?â
I laid a hand on Jaxâs arm when he tensed. âOf course. Thank you for coming. Have a good time tonight.â I led Jax away because there was no talking to Jannah. Her mind was made up. She didnât even hesitate before shutting Jax down. Jannah Swanson was one hundred percent pro-council.
As we caught people alone for quiet moments, it became increasingly obvious that they all thought the same as Jannah. Either they rebuffed Jax completely or they brushed him off with a subject change.
