Anna had managed to stay away from both the bar and the drugs. The crowd at the party was becoming more and more rowdy as it decreased in size. By 11:15 only a dozen couples remained, and about three of had filtered upstairs, doing God knows what, Anna thought.

The surgeon had spirited Barbie Fields upstairs not long after Anna had recognized her. So far they hadn’t returned. As far as Anna was concerned, Doctor Good Hands could keep the Journal employee busy all night.

Several times, some of the men at the party had attempted to approach Anna. Sometimes they wanted to dance; other times they had tried to make casual conversation. Each time, Anna had finessed her way out of the situation before it reached a level beyond “casual.”

She was looking for Bobby so that they could slip away when someone put a hand on her shoulder.

She turned.

“We haven’t met,” Dr. Cletus Wilson said.

Anna’s body froze, her eyes darting about in search of Barbie Fields.

Like his wife, he wore jeans. He had changed his shirt and was wearing one of those safari jacket styles, gaping open almost to his stomach. Thick curls of graying hair covered his chest.

“Annie Tyson,” she said.

“Clete Wilson, Annie. It doesn’t look to me like you’re having much fun.”

“Oh, no. I am. Actually, Clete . . . it is Clete?”

“Yes, Clete.”

“I’ve been feeling a little under the weather tonight, so I’ve tried to slow down a little.”

“I’m a doctor—” He brought his hand up to examine her eyes.

Damn . . . damn . . . damn. What a stupid thing for me to say. She had forgotten that he was a doctor. “It’s nothing like that. I’m okay.”

He tried to place his palm on her forehead. In the process it knocked against her wig, which she felt shift a little. “Maybe I can give you something to make you feel better.”

“Please don’t,” she said, leaning back from his touch. “It’s nothing, the usual women’s problems.”

Where the hell was Bobby? She wanted out of here!

“There’s some grass over on the table. It’s potent but very mild in flavor. I can’t speak from experience, but, according to my wife, it does wonders for her PMS. I have read research—”

“I just need some sleep,” Anna said.

Bobby still wasn’t anywhere to be seen, but the corpulent silhouette of Princess appeared at the foot of the steps. Her dark hair was mussed and she was adjusting her clothing.

“Have you seen Bobby?” Anna asked.

Princess giggled. “Actually, he’s upstairs. I think he sniffed something that didn’t agree with him.”

“Oh, dear. I’d best go check on him.”

“Auntie’s takin’ care of him, Annie. He’s in good hands.”

Clete Wilson approached from Anna’s blind side and dared to caress her face with his hand. “The poor child doesn’t feel well either, Princess.”

He exchanged a wicked grin with his niece.

“Would you like to go up and lay down?” Princess said, again daring to put a fleshy arm around Anna’s waist.

“No, I really must be going.”

“But the evening’s young,” Clete said.
