The view from the kitchen into the dining room reveals what an inviting space it is. The room was an addition by a former owner and feels like an extension of the back garden. The lanterns were found in NYC’s Chinatown and are hung in a cluster above the table.

The living room benefits from dramatic high ceilings and original architectural features. Above the fireplace, a piece of Vlisco fabric has been stretched over a canvas to create a quick, easy and inexpensive piece of art. The clean-lined, boxy green sofa is the Polder by Dutch designer Hella Jongerius.

Kim works as a designer for Dutch textiles brand Vlisco, who manufacture elaborately patterned fashion fabrics mainly for the West African market. She has incorporated some Vlisco fabrics into her décor, covering a sofa in one print, stretching another on canvas like art and using a third as a bedcover. The fabrics are just one of many global influences here: the lanterns over the dining area were picked up in New York’s Chinatown, the portraits on the dining room wall were all collected on various trips to Indonesia, where Kim was born, and the carved wooden statue on the mantelpiece was brought back from the Caribbean by Kim’s father; there are also paintings from Congo and Benin.
