Chapter Sixteen

By appointment only, Madame Tulle’s was Manorview’s only store that sold wedding attire. Racks and racks of bridal dresses lined the walls in every shape and texture possible. A handful of brides-to-be sifted through poufy princess dresses with big smiles on their faces. Lily remembered that feeling, although her dress has been…more manageable. Then she noticed the slimmer beaded options on a separate rack.

“You like shiny things.” Lily pointed. “Why don’t you start there?”

“Maybe I will.” Shanna gestured toward the section of colorful bridesmaids dresses. “And you should look over there.”

Lily’s eyes narrowed. “Right. What color did you say we were wearing?”

“Blush. I thought it would look nice for spring.”

Lily nodded and made her way to the bridesmaid’s section as the sales associate came out to greet them. “Good day, ladies, my name is Ramona. Please let me know how I can be of assistance.”

Lily turned to her. Ramona’s glasses sat halfway down her nose with a beaded cord that swung and hit her jaw as she moved her head. “I’m all set, but I think the bride over there might need some help.”

As Ramona moved in Shanna’s direction, Lily turned to the bridesmaid dresses, barely able to focus. With two more missing bodies, and a possible location for the rituals, looking into any of these dresses seemed low on the totem pole of importance.

“Lily,” Shanna called.

Lily turned to find her sister holding out a fitted strapless satin gown with beads running up and down the entire length of the dress. The back was open with a lace train cascading down for one foot past the hem of the dress. “Look at this.”

“It’s beautiful,” Lily said.

“Isn’t it?” Ramona said with her hands clasped together. “The cut will be perfect for you,”

Shanna smiled. “I’m going to try it on.” She rushed off toward the fitting room while Lily grabbed the simplest chiffon blush gown she could find and waited on the velvet couch for Shanna to emerge.

“Would you like some champagne?” Ramona asked.

“No, thank you.”

“Great choice,” she added, pointing to the blush-colored dress in Lily’s hand.

Lily’s jaw dropped when Shanna stepped out of the dressing room. “Wow. You look beautiful.”

Shanna smiled as she stared at herself in the mirror. Her eyes glittered with excitement. “Do I need to try more?”

Lily got up and stood beside her in front of the mirror. “Probably would be smart. But it does fit you perfectly.”

Ramona approached Shanna with a glass of champagne. “It looks fabulous,” she crooned. “I’ll start pulling the veils.”

Shanna took the glass. “Great. You don’t want any?” she asked, turning toward Lily.

Lily shook her head. “No, you enjoy it.”

“Don’t feel like celebrating?” She sipped the champagne.

“I do. I’m happy for you. You look amazing.” Lily shrugged. “Do I feel bad about yelling at Zachary? A little and maybe I have too much going on.”

“You were hard on him. He has nothing to do with this mess.”

Lily nodded. “You’re right. I think I secretly resent that he’s gotten so close to a horrible person.
