IT WOULD DOUBTLESSLY EMBARRASS HIM TO KNOW THIS, but I call Mervin “the Magician” for the way he seems to make fish appear on a previously vacant flat. Often I have found myself wading a flat that he has chosen, scanning for fish, but drifting listlessly into one of those piercingly quiet moments during which the reverent can stare briefly into his own soul, or toward the possibility of a soul—before the white sand between the turtle grass suddenly gains texture with moving shadows and tails.

Usually if Mervin catches me in one of these dehydration-induced poetic trances, he will simply whistle and point in the direction of the fish, but occasionally he’ll ad-lib.

“Chris. Group coming in over your left shoulder. They’re going to split us.”

“I don’t see ’em, Merv.”

In which case, to get his point across, Merv can become a measured realist:

“Your eleven o’clock. Point your rod. Good. Right there.”

“I still don’t see ’em.”

Or an exuberant impressionist: “Keep looking just under the surface. They’re that minirevolution that’s about to run you over.”

Sometimes I get the feeling that the fish are always there, that it’s just my attention to them that waxes and wanes. As Henry David Thoreau said: “Music is perpetual, and only hearing is intermittent.”
