Hong Kong

Jamie and Bond spent the better part of two hours going over a map of downtown Hong Kong. Trying to get in the mind of hit men. Where would they go to look for Jamie? Alex had made the right call sending Bond to help her. He was as good as there was at tactical reconnaissance. He’d spent most of his career recruiting and managing undercover assets for MI6, the British equivalent of the CIA.

As such, he spent a lot of time in unfamiliar cities, managing drops, watching for tails, shaking surveillance, and uncovering threats.

Jamie’s plan was to spread out on foot and see if they could spot any hit men in Hong Kong. If either of them identified a potential target, Qin had two teams ready to swoop in and detain them for questioning. A proactive way to deal with the threats. Jamie wasn’t going to go into hiding nor go about her business in the hope that she could elude them or kill them before they killed her.

“Let’s go over this again,” she said to Bond. They were in her hotel room with a map of Hong Kong spread out on the coffee table in front of them.

“We’ve gone over it enough,” Bond said, clearly bored.

They weren’t in a hurry. Qin wouldn’t have his teams in place for another hour.

“Humor me,” Jamie said.

“Did you know that Brits spell humor differently than you Yanks?” Bond said. “We spell it with a u. Humour.”

“I did know that.”

“Do you know why?” Bond asked.

Jamie rolled her eyes. “I have a feeling you’re going to tell me.”

Jamie said it coolly with one hand on the map and the other on a list of areas they were each to surveille.

“It’s actually a law.”

“Really,” Jamie said feigning interest.

“That’s right. In the seventeenth century, a London Court called Old Bailey, ruled that words should have our endings. So that’s what we Brits did. Flavour for instance. Savour is another one. Armour. Harbour. Favourite.”

Was he going to go through all of them?

“It’s more proper to add the u, don’t you think? It rolls off your tongue better than your way.”

“I’ve never thought about it.”

“Your. That’s a word you got right. Although, if you want to be consistent, you should say yor.”

“Can we get back to the maps?”

“You Yanks are very confusing,” Bond added, ignoring her comment. “Take the word glamour. That’s another word where you keep the our. Why is that?”

“I couldn’t say.”

“I’m not surprised. You Americans are very rebellious. You do what you want whenever you want. No regard for the rules. You take our language and then butcher it. We Brits like to follow the rules of proper grammar and decorum for that matter. Maybe it’s because you don’t have a Queen to model proper etiquette for you.”

“That’s why we had a revolution,” Jamie retorted. “We didn’t like all your rules.”

“Some rules, such as grammar, are meant to be followed no matter what.”

“Good! Let me give you some rules of engagement for today. Don’t interact with the hit men if you can avoid it.
