CHAPTER 14
âGood morning, you two,â Sophie called from behind the counter at the Belgian Bean, where Madison and I were meeting for breakfast. âThereâs a table open in the back.â The cheerful café was a hive of activity this morning, with all seats in the front room full and a line waiting at the counter. The Bean was now one of Blueberry Coveâs favorite eateries, and I was glad to see Sophieâs hard work paying off.
âPerfect,â Madison said, giving her two thumbs-up. âWeâll have our usual coffee orders and two Benedicts.â
Sophieâs brows rose. âOh, splurging today, I see.â She grinned.
âYou bet,â I said, my belly already rumbling. Her concoction of poached eggs resting on ham and a Belgian waffle with hollandaise sauce was absolutely to die for.
We made our way to the back room, which was slightly quieter and overlooked the harborâa major point in its favor. As Sophie had promised, a two-top next to the windows was free, so we grabbed it.
âBreakfast at the Bean,â Madison said with a sigh as she slipped into a seat. âMy favorite.â She gazed out at a lobster boat chugging across the harbor.
âMine too.â I set my tote bag on the floor, then sat, smoothing my full skirt under my bum. Today I wore a cute new dress with a bluebird print, trimmed with matching blue piping.
âLove that dress,â Madison said. âDid you make it?â
âThanks. I did. Itâs from a great nineteen-fifties pattern I found.â I fiddled with the packs of sugar, hoping that we wouldnât have to wait too long to eat.
Madison was still eyeing my dress. âThat style really suits you. Iâd like some retro outfits, but with my bony bodâ¦â She scrunched up her nose.
âCut it out. Youâre gorgeous.â I thought for a moment. âIf youâre serious, Iâll gather some ideas.â
She shifted in her seat. âWould you? I would love that.â
Sophie hurried into the room, carrying a tray. She set our plates on the table, followed by huge mugs, condiments, and wrapped utensils, then pulled over an empty chair. âI can sit for a few. The team up front has it under control.â
âAwesome,â I said. âThat gives us a chance to visit.â I stared down at my plate, admiring the presentation before grabbing my fork and knife and attacking.
Between bites, we talked about the menu for the museum open house. Sophie offered to make some of the appetizers for us. âI have a great old cookbook with really cool canapé recipes. Iâve been wanting to make them for ages.â
âOh, I adore trying vintage recipes.â My phone rang. Bella. Then I had an idea. âHey,â I said when I answered, âwant to do a video call? Iâm with Sophie and Madison.â I set up my phone up against the napkin dispenser so we could all see.
After a round of greetings, Madison asked, âHow are you doing, Bella?â
Bella sighed, pushing hair off her forehead. âNot too bad, considering. Trying not to think about anything, or worry. Iâm just focusing on the kids and taking care of myself.
