“An interesting, scarcely explored alternative possibility” is 15...h5, wrote Leonard Barden in a 1963 book on the Ruy Lopez. He cited the game Boleslavsky – Saigin, Minsk 1961 in which Black obtained excellent play after 16 ♕f3 h4 17 ♘d2 ♗g4 18 ♕g2 hxg3 19 fxg3 ♕h5.

But this new idea disappeared after one test in international chess, and it came in the sixth round at Havana. Fischer improved against R.G.Wade with 17 ♗xd5! cxd5 18 ♘d2 ♗e6 19 ♗f4. Although they drew – after 19...♗g4 20 ♕g2!? ♕xg2+ 21 ♔xg2 h3+ 22 ♔g1 ♗xf4 – there was no GM interest in 15...h5 after that.
