Chapter 15

JASON

When Blue first told him her plan to stir up some chaos, Jason should have known better than to follow along. After all, he’d seen the effect she had on the order of the universe. Hell, he’d lived it. Three times. The first time no more than a week after he’d met her. Then she’d come back and gotten him embroiled in the machinations of an ancient evil entity. But Blue hadn’t stopped there. No, she somehow got herself transported to a tropical forest filled with deadly predators, on the hunt herself for a kidnapped Forrest and Levi.

Stir things up a little, she said. It will be fun, she said.

Now here he lay, naked and pinned in his own bathtub by a smart-ass blond sporting a cocky grin. He blinked stinging eyes, thankful that the pain level had dropped from melting eyeball acid to who cut the onions. His sight wasn’t fully recovered, but he could make out more than blurry blobs. In an hour, he wouldn’t have to be lead around like a helpless child or have to huddle in an oversized porcelain bowl for protection.

And maybe his sarcastic side had decided to make an appearance at the utter disaster tonight had been. Maybe Trevon the Insufferable had rubbed off on him.

Maybe he was finally tired of it all. Tired of feeling like he was in the dark, tired of surprises, tired of the Ministry treating its agents like expendable tools, tired of unreal expectations, and tired of seeing good people having their lives upended because those in authority were too stuck in their ways.

Tired of knowing no matter what he did, he’d be letting someone down.

For a bare moment, Jason let exhaustion weigh his limbs down, and he sagged under Forrest.

“Hey, man.” Forrest pushed himself off Jason’s body and stared down, a slight frown of concern dragging his brows together. “I was just teasing, you know?”

Jason gave a curt nod, gathered his strength, and shoved the nuisance off him and over the lip of the tub. Twisting, his bare skin slid against the cool porcelain with an undignified squee.

“Right,” Forrest continued. “I’ll go see what the hell. I mean, I figure it’s over, since Blue checked on us and all, but yeah.” In a moment, he was out the door and into the bedroom, leaving Jason to finish getting dressed on his own.

Low murmurs and a muffled bang came through the door as Jason plucked an oatmeal hued towel off the rack and finished drying off. A low knock came, and the door cracked open. Forrest slipped back in, a bundle of clothes cradled in one arm.

“Looks like it is over, but Ass is having a conniption over the fact that someone is bound to have called the police. He’s hurrying us up.” Forrest handed over the clothes—a pair of jeans, an undershirt, and a bulky green sweater.

With that, he was gone again, allowing Jason to change in peace. Jason hurried. While this wasn’t the best neighborhood, it also wasn’t a complete slum.
