Once, my friend, who sleeps with her windows slightly open even in Calgary’s bitter-cold February, brought me six perfect peaches in a painted box from 17th Avenue. If I am going away, she brings me purple sage from the outskirts of the city (“to remind you of home,” she says). I roll the sage in my underwear and inhale its fragrance when I leave it to dry in a drawer elsewhere, in another country. When I am in town, often we go to Millarville Farmers’ Market on basky Saturday summer mornings, a fifty-minute drive out of Calgary. My friend drives a convertible. She says you are allowed to wave when you are in a convertible. Is that not simply Zen-Chinook?
