Grace watched as her garage door slid open. It gave her a thrill to know she was the proud owner of this cottage. But before she could open the car door, Jamie and Kenzie were standing there, with cheek-splitting grins.
âWelcome home, Grace!â Kenzie and Jamie said together.
âGood flight?â Jamie asked.
Grace leaned her head out the window and laughed. âCan I get out of the car, please?â
Kenzie said, âPop the trunk and Iâll grab your bags.â
Grace did as she asked and rolled up the window before shutting the car off. It was good to be home. The moment she was out of the car, her sisters pulled her into a bear hug.
She smiled. âHey, be careful, youâre going to hug the stuffing right out of me.â
âWe missed you, squirt,â Kenzie said. âIt was weirdâwe were here and you were there.â
Jamie was nodding in agreement. âLetâs not vacation apart too often.â
Grace held them tight. âYou do know your husbands may want to vacation without family, specifically your younger sister tagging along.â
Jamie stepped out of her arms. âHa!â She smirked. âIf he thinks he gets me all to himself all the time, weâll be having a talk.â
Kenzie was studying Grace. âYou donât look any different.â
Grace was puzzled. âWhy would I?â
Kenzie snorted. âFalling in love and all. I thought it might change you.â
âWho said anything about love? I just had a bit of fun. Nothing more.â She hoped her eyes wouldnât betray the sadness she felt. Anxious to change the subject she linked arms with them. âLetâs forget about the luggageâyou said something about wine and food?â
Jamie laughed. âWe have plenty of wine to loosen your tongue so youâll tell us everything that happened. Youâve been uncharacteristically silent.â She steered Grace through the kitchen and out the back door.
Graceâs mouth formed an O. Tears pricked her eyes. Her sisters had hung twinkling lights and placed potted flowers around the perimeter of the patio. The wrought-iron table was set with a platter of appetizers, three wine glasses and two bottles of red wine. âYou didnât need to do all of this.â
Jamie pointed Grace toward a chaise. âHave a seat. After the last few days, you needed a really nice welcome home.â
âI need to run inside. Iâll be right out.â Grace hurried into the house and kicked off her shoes. Her sisters were right, this was exactly what she needed. Time with them always helped her.
Grace freshened up and was walking through the kitchen when she stopped to listen to Kenzie and Jamie. She had to strain as their voices were low.
Jamie said, âIâd like to wring his neck.â
âI canât believe Mrs. Mâs nephew would turn out to be such a jerk. Sheâs so sweet, and didnât she have a hand in raising him?â
âShe did,â Jamie said, âbut obviously he missed something to be so cavalier with the truth.â
Kenzie agreed. âWhy do you think she wasnât interested in Tait?â
Grace had heard enough. She pushed open the back door and saw the look on their faces. Pure guilt.
