Chapter Twelve

To my surprise, Laurent pulls into the funeral home. I didn’t even stop to think that there would be services for Simone Vincent. How did I forget about that? The police arrested Maxwell Decker. The only one who thinks there might be other leads to track down is Detective Bilson, and that’s because Riley, Ben, and I made him consider that possibility. Everyone else at the station is happy to pin the murder on Maxwell Decker.

I immediately call Detective Bilson. “Did you know the services for Simone Vincent are going on right now?”

“No. They were never publicized.”

Then it must be a family-only kind of service. “Do you think the family is trying to cover up something by keeping the public away?”

“Which funeral home at you at?” Detective Bilson asks.

“The one on Mulberry.”

“I’m on my way. Don’t do anything without me.” He hangs up before I can respond.

“We can’t just sit in the truck and do nothing,” Riley says.

“If it’s really a closed service, we won’t be let inside,” Ben says. “Our best bet is to wait for Detective Bilson to get here and try to go inside with him.”

“You think Garrett Bilson will have better luck getting inside than we will?” Riley scoffs. “Please. We can totally do this.”

“How exactly?” These people know our faces. We can't walk right in there pretending to be long-lost family. Besides, long lost family wouldn’t even know about the service.

Riley turns to me and smiles. “I have an idea. Anyone have a flash drive on them?”

“No.” I turn in my seat to face her. “Why?”

“What if we create a new fake will and tell everyone Simone gave it to you and asked you to hold on to it. You can pretend she suspected someone was trying to kill her, and you were her backup plan to make her secret will publicly known at her funeral service.”

Who gives a complete stranger something as personal as their last will and testament? “I’d think she’d entrust something like that to Leslie or Jesse before the employee she hired the same day she was killed.”

“People do crazy and irrational things all the time,” Riley says. “But for this plan to work, we need a flash drive.”

“No, we don’t,” Ben says. “We just need an online will and access to it.”

“This has to be completely illegal,” I say. I’m not looking to get arrested today. It will be pretty tough to clear Maxwell Decker’s name if I’m sharing a jail cell with the man.

“Okay, then we don’t fake a will. We send the family on a wild goose chase to find it.” Riley leans forward. “Let’s come up with a riddle or something that they have to try to solve.”

“What have you been watching on TV?” I ask her.

“Too much?”

Ben and I both nod.

Riley throws her hands in the air. “I don’t hear either of you coming up with a plan.”

I lean my head back on the seat, unable to think of a way to get inside that funeral home without Detective Bilson’s help.
