Chapter Thirteen

D ana found it very strange, being caught in Poppy’s magic but not able to see into her mind. This kind of connection should have made them entirely open to each other, but instead, Dana was just left interpreting the ebb and flow of magic.

There did seem to be a pattern. She could see when it was more intense and when it settled. Eventually, she decided that Poppy didn’t seem too upset, but she did seem concerned, the waves never settling to a calm but also never tossing her around.

Eventually Poppy opened her eyes and frost coated their hands.

“Sorry,” Poppy said as she realised what she was doing, pulling her hands away.

“It didn’t work, did it?” Dana asked, and Poppy shook her head.

Viktor sighed. “I’ll get the others.”

Dana took that to mean that nothing about the spell had worried him, so she let him leave before turning to Poppy.

“What happened?”

“The prison is cutting off her magic. I can reach in, but she can’t reach out.”

“That was it?”

“No. We talked. She showed me memories. Dana... She never lost her humanity. Juniper did.”

Dana nodded, not all that surprised. It made sense now that Poppy had said it. Rose had been sick, but she hadn’t been as different as Poppy was now.

Viktor returned with Noah, David and Damon, and Dana figured that they probably hadn’t gone far.

“I can’t access Rose’s power,” Poppy told them. “I can reach into her prison, but she can’t reach out. We need to convince the Dwarves to let her go.”

Damon sighed. “That’s not going to be easy.”

“No, but we don’t have an option. And Rose had an idea. She thought that the thing that scared them was our humanity. That if I play up my loss of humanity, they might see me as easier to deal with.”

Dana figured it sounded like it might be a reach, but Damon nodded.

“She might be right. People were afraid of Freya at first when she lost her humanity, but they soon settled once they got used to her, and honestly? She’s a better ruler than her father was, but, and I mean this with love and the acknowledgement that we’re a team in this, not by that much. But they don’t see her as a person, they see her as an ethereal protector, and that puts them at ease. It might be the same for you and the Dwarves. They reacted badly to you and Rose when you were being too human. Let’s see how they react now.”

Dana turned to him. “None of us are skilled in political negotiation.”

“Willow and I can help, but Freya needs to be here anyway to heal Nature. It would be best if she’s not here for long, but if this ends up being a prolonged negotiation... Well, Amelia might not have that much time. I’ll go and get her.”

“And I’ll make sure Poppy is presentable.”

Wind whipped around them unhappily, but Dana just looked Poppy up and down with a raised eyebrow. She was in a pair of black joggers and a plain green t-shirt.
