Chapter Thirteen

"Hi, I'm here to check on my car. They said it would be ready today."

The young lady at the police counter, whom Kallie recognized as the younger sister of a guy in her graduating class, looked at her for a second before realizing who she was. "Oh! Oh, no. I’m sorry, it's not here, Miss Brooks. That whole case is being handled by the county."

"The county?"

"We just don't have the manpower here. I mean, that's a really big case. Your car's down in St Pete." She paused, but apparently didn't think that was a good enough explanation. "They have a real crime lab and stuff."

Kallie nodded, realizing it made sense, and not sure why she hadn't thought of it. Owhiro was a tiny beach town with almost no crime. She wasn't even sure if they had a single real detective.

"Let me call them, and make sure it's ready for you. I'd hate for you to drive all the way down there—"

The girl called the St Petersburg office and talked to someone who was apparently a friend, while Kallie walked around the quaint little police station. It was as quirky and old-fashioned as the rest of Owhiro. Tourists and visitors were always surprised by the adorable town square filled with colorful, historical bungalows and cobblestone streets, on the edge of the bustling combined metropolis of Tampa and St Petersburg.

Pictures of police chiefs and their era-specific cars, going back to the 1940s, hung on the station walls. In a few older black-and-white photos, officers were pictured with horses. Kallie smiled at the faded old photos in spite of her annoyance about the car – trying not to think about the nightmarish crime that had damaged her trust in her tiny, sweet hometown.

"Your car's ready, Miss Brooks,” the young lady called, walking back toward her. Her name’s Jeannie, Kallie recalled out of the blue, Jason’s sister. “They said you can pick it up at the main station in St Pete, any time."

"Thanks," she started to leave but Jeannie stopped her, with a gentle hand on her arm.

"I know you don't know me, Miss Brooks, but we're all so sorry this happened."

"Yeah, me too," Kallie replied with a sad smile.
