CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN

Rain dripped slowly from the roofs of Lumeril’s structures, hitting the platforms rhythmically. The sound drifted through the forest city like a lullaby; the atmosphere, hazy and muted, wrapped the trees in vaporous blankets. Laothim wore a light cloak to protect his clothing from the rain as he walked to the Prophets’ council hall. He passed the prison, which now stood empty. Unable to convince the assassins to talk, the elder Prophets had deemed them too dangerous to keep alive. They couldn’t afford another escape like the one that ended with Brendamina’s kidnapping. The last prisoner to leave the cells was Tarbuth Ream, who had been hired by Obrevian Ray to watch for the princess. Laothim shook his head at the memory. So many near disastrous occurrences had followed one right after another. The elder Prophets had nearly condemned Tarbuth’s cousin, Tolthos, to death, mistaking Tolthos for Tarbuth. Obrevian’s role in all of it had almost been missed entirely.

Then Igthalus kidnapped Brendamina, injuring her while attempting to find out information about Eloekim through Brendamina’s dreams. Igthalus died before standing trial. What he wanted to know about Eloekim remained a mystery to Laothim and the other elders. Obrevian wouldn’t say anything, though the elder Prophets believed he’d helped the assassin escape. Now as Laothim walked, he wondered. Why had Igthalus been so obsessed with Eloekim? Why had those assassins come seeking the young leader of the White Riders? What was so special about him?

As the Prophet approached the council hall, his thoughts drifted to one of his last memories of Amorhi before she left Calbereth. She’d brought a hand-copied genealogy before the elders, hoping to convince them the Highborn Prophecy could be fulfilled. She hadn’t said by whom, and now Laothim’s brow furrowed while he puzzled. Could Eloekim be the one? Why wouldn’t Amorhi just say so if he was? Granted, he’d been sought by dangerous assassins and targeted by wayward Prophets. Amorhi had probably been trying to protect him or whoever was the supposed descendent of the first king of Taliale.

Pushing those thoughts aside, Laothim entered the council hall. A few young students were being initiated as full Prophets today. It was all pomp and ceremony, nothing mentally taxing. Nonetheless, Laothim knew he should devote his full attention to it. Sitting down next to Kammin, Laothim waited for the rest of the elders to take their seats before beginning the induction. After Rammul died, the elders determined Laothim should step into the late Prophet’s position. He hadn’t particularly desired the role, but Laothim took it on anyway.

The elders had nearly completed the ceremony when a knock sounded on the door and a watchman entered, looking flustered.

“I’m sorry to interrupt, but someone has arrived who insists upon an immediate audience with you,” the watchman explained. “I tried to convince him you were busy with this, but he maintains it is more important.”

Kammin and Laothim exchanged glances. Who could possibly have such urgent business with them? Who would have the gall
